Worcester City FC U15s welcomed West Mids Barnsley to Perdiswell sports centre on a stunning autumn morning where conditions were perfect for a great game of football.
1st quarter – Very strong start by Barnsley who immediately placed WCFC under pressure with a barrage of attacks played mainly through the middle of the pitch and involving their lively centre forward. One particular stunning shot smacked against the cross bar and would have given Barnsley a deserved lead. However as often happens in football WCFC were awarded a free-kick against the run of play which Joe curled into the penalty area for Alex to attack and he made no mistake when he glanced his header in the bottom corner 1-0! After the goal WCFC started to settled down and have the bulk of the possession & chances. But as had happened earlier in the quarter Barnsley scored against the run of play when a long ball was delivered into the box which WCFC hesitated in clearing and Woody Norman pounced to make it 1-1!
2nd quarter – A few changes from both teams resulted in WCFC creating far more chances this quarter and generally controlling the flow of the game. Following good play from Tyler down the right, WCFC gained a corner where Joe found Archie and his looping header flew past the keeper 2-1! Soon after a long throw by Charlie found Joe, he beat his man and drilled in a precise ball to Archie who 30yrds from goal took the ball past the last defender with an exquisite first touch and slotted it just inside the post giving the goalie no chance 3-1!
3rd quarter – More changes this quarter led to WCFC conceding more of the midfield space and Barnsley took advantage by gaining plenty of possession, however WCFC were strong & organized in defense with Dan, Elijah, Toby, Harry & Charlie working well to keep the Barnsley attack quiet, no goals this quarter.
4th quarter - With injuries leading to more changes for both teams the last quarter was very similar to the 3rd until 5 minutes from the end. With WCFC frustratingly conceding a series of free-kicks in & around the box Harrison Cook took advantage and fired his free-kick into the bottom corner to make it 3-2 and set-up a thrilling end to the game. Barnsley poured forward at every opportunity, yet WCFC remained strong defensively and saw the game out to win 3-2!
Our thanks to WM Barnsley who played some great football in what was a finely contested game which could have been won by either team, we look forward to the return fixture.
