Midfield man enjoying life with City...

CITY’S focus this season is on giving local talent its chance so it’s rather fitting that Brad Birch has been handed the captain’s armband.

The talented midfielder is a lifelong fan of the club and a former youth team skipper.
“I’m extremely proud to have been named captain,” he said. “This club means so much to me and my family. My granddad has been coming to games for years, so it’s a real honour to skipper the side.

“I want to play my part in helping this club get back to where it belongs. It’s going to be a long road, but we have already started to make good progress.”

Birch got his name on the scoresheet in Tuesday evening’s 5-1 victory over Coventry Sphinx but was forced off through injury with just 15 minutes on the clock.

“It’s an impact injury,” he added. “I picked it up against Boldmere and missed the next game as a result. I should have sat out Tuesday’s game too but I was desperate to play.
“Unfortunately our opponents came here to ‘get amongst us’ and I took a knock early on. It’ll be fine with a bit of rest; we’ve got no midweek game next week, so I’ll be back for the next home game.”

With 32 goals and just one defeat from our opening ten League games, the signs are looking promising.

“We look a real threat every time we go forward,” added Birch. “Teams tend to try to unsettle us, as was the case with Coventry Sphinx, but we let our football do the talking.
“We’ve set some high standards and September has been a very good month for us. Hopefully we can keep it going between now and Christmas and remain amongst the leaders.

“Every game is tough; we face a battle every time we step onto the pitch, but there is enough quality here to fancy our chances against anyone in this League.
“We’ll go to Shawbury on Saturday with plenty of belief and fully focused on doing our job.”

Birch also had praise for the City faithful who have supported the club so well this season.
“The fans have been massive,” he said without hesitation. “They turn up in good numbers both home and away and I just love playing in front of them.

“They can see that we’ve got a group of predominantly local lads who are going out there and giving their all for the club.

“This level of support is going to be vital during the battles ahead and long may it continue."
