Eddie Wilcox

WCFC ONLINE14 Jan 2015 - 09:20

We’re sad to announce that former City player Eddie Wilcox has passed away at the age of 87.

Eddie played nearly 400 games for City between 1951 and 1960 and was one of the stars of the side that famously beat Liverpool in the F.A. Cup in 1959.

Born in Wales in 1927, Eddie started his career after the war as an amateur with Oxford City before joining West Bromwich Albion as a centre forward, but after three seasons and 12 first team games (3 goals) he signed for City in July 1951. Converted firstly to a wing-half and then a defender, Eddie went on to give the club great service, making more first team appearances than any other player in the fifties. Against Liverpool he was totally solid at right back. He played his last game for City in 1960, eventually being forced to retire through injury.

We were fortunate to be able to welcome Eddie back on a number of occasions in recent years and he was present for the final game at St. George’s Lane against Chester in 2013.

Eddie will be remembered as one of the finest City players of his generation. On behalf of everyone at the club, our deepest sympathies go to all his family.
