'Former Director and City Fan passes away'

We are sad to report the loss of another much respected supporter, Tony Speer, who passed away suddenly last week at the age of 79. Tony began supporting City in the fifties. He became Chairman of the Blue Dragons Supporters Club and was subsequently a Director. He was a leading light in organising the Gala Days at St. George’s Lane in the late eighties.

Tony, who ran his own accountancy business for many years, became a Director at one of the most challenging times in our recent history. The club was in deep financial trouble with the Inland Revenue and struggling to stay alive. Thanks to a successful Save The City appeal and the end of season Galas, which Tony played a key role in organising alongside friends such as Alan Wills, Roger Pugh, Trevor Griffiths and Brian Lancaster, we survived. Probably only Tony will know how many hours he spent helping to keep the Club afloat. He stood down in 1988, in the wake of the row which eventually Gerald Turner quit as Chairman.
Tony remained actively involved with the Vice Presidents Club and continued to follow us from St. George’s Lane to Kidderminster and Bromsgrove before our return home in 2020. In recent years he sponsored the club with advertising boards and player sponsorships and was a regular visitor to Claines Lane right up until his death.

Steve Goode paid this tribute to Tony: “Tony was a massive part of the football club and followed the City through good and bad times. He was a former director, vice president and served on many committees of the club over many years. Tony and his family had sponsored the club over many seasons. Tony was always approachable and had great knowledge of the club and everybody involved with at City sends their deepest sympathies to his wife Wynn, his boys and family.”

Tony will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him here at Worcester City F.C. He’s pictured here during his time as a Director, sitting third from the right.
