We were sad to learn at the weekend of the death of Steve Miller, who covered football for BBC Hereford & Worcester from the station’s launch in 1989 until the end of last year.
Steve began his broadcasting career on Radio Wyvern before becoming the first person to cover Worcester City for BBC local radio. He was also the voice of the Worcester City Sportsline telephone service in the late 80s and early 90s. But Steve will always be best known as the voice of Kidderminster Harriers. “The Millerman” as he was called commentated on over 1,000 Harriers games for local radio listeners from 1994 through until last year. Steve was present for all their big moments, from winning the Conference to their debut in the Football League, some famous F.A. Cup runs and appearing in the first cup final to be played at the new Wembley stadium.
Before all of that, Steve was a big City fan, following us home and away for many years. He was involved with the Supporters Club and the Gala Committee before starting out on the radio.
Steve Goode said of Steve: “It was such sad news to hear about his passing. He was one of those people who, when doing his job communicating on local football, made me feel like I was at the game. He was very passionate and professional at what he did, and it was my pleasure to call him a friend. I’ve never known anyone to say a bad word about him and it’s such a massive loss to local sport. Everybody involved with Worcester City Football Club would like to send their sincere condolences to Steve’s family.”
With a reliable and dedicated approach to his work behind the microphone, Steve Miller earned the respect of players, managers and fans alike, although he was never shy in expressing his thoughts about referees. He was unique in his delivery and his enthusiasm created some memorable commentaries.
Steve was diagnosed with cancer in December 2024, and passed away in St Richard's Hospice on Saturday, 22 February 2025.
