Midfielder Joe Jackson is a big favourite to anyone who watched City during the 80s or 90s. Joe made 186 appearances for City in two spells, having started out at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made his first team debut at the end of the 1983/84 season. His time at Wolves came to an end when Tommy Docherty took over as manager and he moved into non-league football with Bilston and Hednesford.
Joe signed for City from Gresley Rovers in August 1988. His impressive displays in midfield suggested that he was destined to play in higher standard football. An elegant passer with a hard as nails streak, Joe quickly developed into one of the best players in a side that also included City legends such as John McGrath, Mark Shail, Ian Cottrill and Steve Fergusson.
Joe won the Player of the Season award in 1988/90, when we finished fourth in the Southern League Premier Division, but he eventually moved to Yeovil Town for a fee of £15,000 in September 1990. After one season, Joe joined Dover Athletic for £12,000, and helped them to win promotion to the Conference in 1993.
He was training with Walsall and travelling down for matches, and inevitably he wanted to return closer to home. He came back to Worcester when his old boss George Rooney signed him for an undisclosed four-figure fee in August 1994.
After two seasons back at the Lane, Joe moved on when George was forced to cut his wage bill. He went back to Bilston, where he became player-manager, and subsequently managed Stourbridge, winning the Midland Football Alliance championship two seasons in succession.
After a short spell with Bromsgrove Rovers, Joe quit management and worked as Football Development Officer for Wolverhampton College before setting up his own business, NPV Development, helping disadvantaged young people in his home city of Wolverhampton to adopt football as a positive way of changing their lives. In 2013, he received a long service award from the FA and was presented with the honour at Buckingham Palace by HRH Prince William.
