#ThrowbackThursday Steve Fergusson

"he fully deserves the status of City Legend"

Steve Fergusson made 314 appearances for City in two different spells between 1987 and 1996. He is one of a select band of 9 players who have scored 100 goals in Blue And White, although he was equally at home playing in defence, midfield or attack. During his time at the club he featured in every position, including goalkeeper. At one time or another, he was club captain, player-manager, top goalscorer and twice Player of the Year.

Steve had been with a host of clubs locally before George Rooney signed him in the 1987 close season, starting with Bromsgrove Rovers in 1978 before moving onto Redditch, Moor Green, Alvechurch and Redditch again. His first goal for City was a spectacular last gasp equaliser in an FA Cup replay at home to Corby, and he scored another memorable goal in the same competition against Yeovil a couple of months later.

Steve became our leading player over the next three seasons, playing alongside the likes of Mark Shail, Joe Jackson and John McGrath, and when Doug Griffiths was sacked as manager, he took over as player-manager for the remainder of the 1989/90 season, successfully steering us away from relegation. However, he didn’t get the job on a permanent basis, and reverted back to a player-only role.

It came as a huge shock when, on transfer deadline day 1990, Steve was sold to local rivals Gloucester City together with full-back Brendan Hackett for a combined fee of £27,500. The deal was done by the board of directors against the will of manager Ally Robertson. At the time Steve was club captain and the leading goalscorer in the Beazer Homes League Premier Division. Gloucester had made several previous attempts to lure Steve away from St. George's Lane and they made the directors an offer they couldn’t refuse. City chairman Dr Michael Sorensen justified the sale, saying that the money would stop us from going bust.
Things quickly went pear-shaped at Gloucester as crippling debts almost caused them to fold and Steve moved onto Telford United in the Conference. After three good seasons there he made a surprise return to the Lane when George Rooney signed him for a second time in the Summer of 1994.

It was like old times again as George brought back several former players and once more Steve was utilised both in defence, midfield and up front. On the final day of the 1995/96 season he scored twice against Gravesend to take his total number of goals in a City shirt to 101. That summer he rejoined Gloucester City for a second time and he played his final game for them at the Lane in December 1999.

Steve went to Stratford Town for 4 years after Gloucester, then Studley and Feckenham, before he eventually finished playing at the age of 49.

Steve was an intelligent and skilful football player who was comfortable wherever he played. The Faithful were fortunate to see him at his peak and he fully deserves the status of City Legend.
