Final against Local Rivals!

Today Worcester made the short trip to Bewdley Towns ground for the Worcestershire County Cup Final. It was a beautiful sunny day and a decent crowd had turned up to watch the match. Although Worcester had previously beaten their opponents twice in the league, our boys were not taking anything for granted and knew that Evesham would be up for a battle.

1st half – Worcester were quickly into their stride although it was Evesham who nearly drew first blood with a header that went just over the bar from a corner. This seemed to spur Worcester into action and Finn Syson only just failed to convert a Tristan Webby cross after some dazzling wing play. The opening goal soon followed when Joe Palmer latched onto an Ethan Sherwood pass and Joe calmly lifted his shot over the onrushing keeper and into the net.

Worcester were now very much in the ascendancy and pressed hard for a second goal. It was Joe Palmer who again scored after good work from Prince Henry on the wing. Prince outpaced his man and delivered a low cross into the box. Joe controlled the ball in the centre of the goal and placed a firm shot past the keeper. The remainder of the first half saw further efforts on goal from Worcester although it was Evesham who went close in the final stages with a free kick which went just over the bar. 2-0

2nd half – The second half saw a far more determined performance from Evesham who pressed hard for a way back into the game and had a number of long rang efforts on the Worcester goal. At the half way point in the second half Evesham reduced the deficit from a corner with the ball being headed home from close range. This spurred Evesham on and made for an exciting end to the game. As the game wore on Worcester held on resolutely to their lead although Evesham went close to an equaliser shortly before the final whistle only to be denied by a fine save from Joel Chadwick. 2-1

This was a thoroughly entertaining game played by two good sides and was a fitting end to the season. Congratulations to the Worcester boys who have had a terrific season!
