Bring on the Final!!

Today we made the trip to local rivals Evesham United for the semi-final of the County Cup. The forecast wasn’t good, but the game was going ahead.

1st Half – The game kicked off with Worcester playing some neat, passing football although to be honest they did not overly trouble the Evesham keeper in the early stages of the game despite having the wind behind them. Evesham were content to defend in numbers and did not make many forays into the Worcester half and the scoreline stayed at 0-0 until approximately a quarter of the way through the game. Worcester took the lead after good work from Joe Palmer who held the ball up well down by the Evesham corner flag. Joe pulled the ball back to Olly Berry who avoided two challenges and cut inside onto his right foot. Olly bent a shot into the far corner of the net and the lead was no more than Worcester deserved. Worcester added a second shortly before half time and it was again Olly Berry who scored the goal. This was a fine solo effort which ended with Olly unleashing a firm shot which went over the keepers head and into the roof of the net. 2-0

2nd Half – Evesham now had the wind behind them and they started to pepper the goal from distance. They did not overly trouble George Bourne in goal, although a moment of indecision in the Worcester defence resulted in an Evesham striker nipping in and reducing the deficit. Shortly after that George Bourne made a fine fingertip save to prevent an Evesham equaliser. The game was put to bed five minutes from full time when an Olly Berry’s free kick found Tom Mills at the back post whose crossed ball was headed home expertly by Callum Lovegrove from close range. 3-1

The game ended up being played in some of the worst conditions that we have seen, which did not make for a football feast although both sets of players should be applauded for battling on despite the driving sleet and wind! Well done Worcester for making the final for the second consecutive year!
