What a way to win a match!

Worcester City Floodlit squad travelled to local neighbours Stourbridge on a damp, drizzly, dark October night, determined to bounce back from their defeat last Saturday.

First Half
The ref blew the whistle, both teams started very slowly, trying to connect a few passes together and keep possession. Gradually the visitors started to work their way into the game looking to move the ball out wide. Stourbridge responded, and the spectators were treated to a very even midfield battle.

Halfway through the first half, Matty P-R found some space just outside the area and drilled the ball towards goal, unfortunately for the Stourbridge keeper it took a heavy deflection from one of the defenders and sliced into the opposite side of the goal. 0-1.

Stourbridge fought back and pressed City hard. Their unrelenting pressure told when their striker found his way into the area and, left one on one, passed the ball round Ben. 1-1.

Both teams worked hard covering every inch of the wide Stourbridge pitch and were looking for half time when Millsy took the ball into the box, wove round a couple of defenders and laid the ball off to Cam who duly slotted it home. A very elegant goal that came just on the stroke of half time. 2-1.

Second Half
Stourbridge came out fired up. They built up some early pressure on City, intensifying the midfield tackling and looking to channel the ball down the right wing. Again, this early work paid off when they were awarded a free-kick a few yards back from the penalty area. The home striker launched the ball at the City wall, which deflected in the other direction to where Ben was diving and into the net. 2-2.

Stourbridge to their credit took the game to City. Both sides worked hard, but it was probably the home team that shaded the rest of the second half. There were chances at both ends, as the ref signalled three minutes left to play, a draw looked pretty much a certainty.

Then Matti K. ran down the right wing, swung the ball to Matty P-R in the centre, just outside the box. With two defenders to his right, Matty passed the ball in front of his body to his left side and with his left foot curled the ball round the defenders and into the bottom right hand corner of the net; the Stourbridge Keep diving just got his finger tips to it but was beaten. 2-3. The City players bundled Matty to celebrate his high quality goal. The ref blew the whistle to restart the game and immediately blew to close proceedings. City had won the match with the last kick of the game.

The visitors did well to come back from Saturday's game, but it couldn't have been closer. Fairplay to Stourbridge who worked hard and played some very good passing football. We look forward to seeing them again later this season.

The bonus was that City went top of the Midland Floodlit Youth League Southern Premier Division on the back of that result.
