Worcester City Youth Colts U9s had a tough first half but recovered well in the second

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s team had another tough match at home when they hosted the Perdiswell Colts Lions U9s team at Perdiswell Leisure Centre on Saturday 28th September 2019.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Joel gave an upbeat speech to the rest of his team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Theo, Max & Joel
Midfielders - Thomas, Ethan, Toby, Ewan & Hayden
Forwards - Ethan & Nathan

First Half
It was Perdiswell who started the match well and put City under a lot of pressure straight from the whistle. With the wind and the sun at their backs Perdiswell quickly opened the scoring and City found it hard to make any impact on the match.

Perdiswell scored a few more goals before City threatened to score, however in the dying minutes of the first half that is just what City did when Toby battled to the edge of the box and shot at goal, his shot was initially saved by the Perdiswell goal keeper but the rebound fell straight to him again and his second shot flew into the net (this was Toby’s first goal of the season).

Second Half
Stirred by the goal scored at the end of the first half and a call to action from the Manager at half time, the second half began with City holding their own against a Perdiswell team who were now facing the wind.

It was mid-way through the second half when the highlight of the match for City took place; Thomas picked up the ball on the left wing and ran towards the Perdiswell box. On the corner of the box he let fly with a left footed shot which looped over the Perdiswell goal keeper and nestled into the top right corner (this was Thomas’s first goal of the season).

Perdiswell finished the scoring in the match with a goal in the last few minutes, however the City Manager was pleased with the way that the team had rallied after half time and we hope to take this improvement in work rate into next week’s match.

Well played Perdiswell and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed an entertaining game of football. After his great performance in the match and during training last week, Thomas was awarded the Captains armband for next week’s match. Thanks to all the City parents for their help on match day.
