Another great team performance for Worcester City Youth Colts U9s

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s team had another great match at home when they hosted the Droitwich Spa Dynamos U9s team at Perdiswell Leisure Centre on Saturday 9th November 2019.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Toby gave a positive speech to the rest of his team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Joel, Thomas & Ewan
Midfielders - Nathan, Ethan & Toby
Forwards - Ethan & Olly

Before kick off, both teams impeccably observed a minutes silence to mark the anniversary of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, which commemorates the end of World War One and provides an opportunity to remember those who have died during conflicts for their country. Lest we forget.

First Half
Both teams started the game well, but it was City who put Droitwich under early pressure with most of the early chances going the way of the Blue & Whites. Most notably when Ethan shot at goal and was only inches away from scoring but the shot was just the wrong side of the post.

However, it was Droitwich who opened the scoring first. Around the eight minute mark, Droitwich had the ball in the City penalty area following a corner kick and after the ball had pin-balled around a few players, a Droitwich player struck the ball into the City net.

This was a temporary setback for City and the boys didn’t let it get them down and they continued to display some good passing and movement between the midfield and forwards, along with some good running along the wings from Toby & Nathan.

City drew level around the 12 minute mark when Toby hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area which was heading for the goal but was clipped at the last second by Ethan’s foot (this was Ethan’s fourth goal of the season).

Around the 20 minute mark, City had another couple of chances to score when both Olly and Thomas had attempts on goal but their efforts were saved by the Droitwich goal keeper who was having a great match.

In the last couple of minutes of the first half, City won a corner and from the resulting cross, the ball fell to Joel on the edge of the box. With a couple of Droitwich defenders between him and the goal, Joel chipped the ball goal wards and even though the Droitwich goal keeper got a hand to the ball, he was unable to stop it going into the net (this was Joel’s first goal of the season).

Second Half
The second half began with both teams having some good efforts on goal, City managed to keep Droitwich at bay with a great defensive display from Joel, Thomas & Ewan and this was supported by Ethan in the middle of the park who was breaking up play and passing the ball to Toby and Nathan out wide.

The City goal keeper, Tom was called upon a number of times and made some great saves to keep City in the lead.

Around the 35 minute mark, City managed to extend the lead further when Ethan ran past the Droitwich defence to score another goal (this was Ethan’s fifth goal of the season).

In the dying minutes of the match, Droitwich managed to score a second after another goal mouth scrabble following them winning a corner.

Both teams should be commended for not letting the dreadful weather affect their game, especially during the second half of the match. Well done to both sets of boys.

Well played Droitwich and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful, cold and wet! spectators who enjoyed an entertaining game of football. After his great performance during the previous match, Hayden was awarded the Captains armband for next week’s match. Thanks to all the City parents for their help on match day in the winter like conditions.
