Great team performance for Worcester City Youth Colts U9s away from home

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s had a great team performance away from home when they visited the Newtown Sports Juniors U9s team at Greenhill Drive, Malvern on Saturday 4th January 2020.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland gave an encouraging speech to the team. Nathan playing against his old club was Captain for the day.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Theo, Max & Joel
Midfielders - Hayden, Olly, Thomas, Toby & Ethan
Forwards - Nathan

First Half
The match started well for City and after only 3 minutes they were ahead through a great individual goal from Thomas. After running from the corner along the goal line with the ball and evading a Newtown defender, Thomas’s shot was saved by the Newtown goal keeper. However, the rebound fell straight to Thomas again and this time his shot found the back of the Newtown net (that was Thomas’s fifth goal of the season).

Both teams battled over the next 15 mins or so and this cumulated with a Newtown shot hitting the City post, but luckily for City the rebound went straight into the hands of the City goal keeper Tom.

In the 20th minute, City pulled off a great team play when Toby picked up the ball in the City half and played a great pass to Nathan around the centre circle, who in turn made a further great pass to Olly in the Newtown half. Olly ran on with the ball and only a last ditch tackle from a Newtown defender prevented his shot being on target.

2 minutes later and once again the great passing on display from City resulted in another goal. From a defensive position, Max played a pass to Nathan, who ran with the ball deep into the Newtown half and his resultant shot was initially saved by the Newtown shot stopper. However the ball slipped from the keepers grasp and Toby was on hand to put the ball into the back of the Newtown net (that was Toby’s second goal of the season).

In the final minute of the half, City managed to add to their scoring through a superb long range effort from the boot of Olly. His shot was taken from midway between the centre circle and goal and was hit with enough force that meant, even though the Newtown keeper got his hands to the ball, he was unable to keep it from going into the net (that was Olly’s second goal of the season).

Second Half
The second half started with City having a few shots on target from both Toby and Nathan; however the Newtown goal keeper was up to the challenge and kept them all out.

In the 37th minute, a Newtown forward managed to dispossess one of the City defenders towards the edge of the touchline and after only a couple of steps unleashed a long range strike which flew into the bottom corner of the City net.

In the 46th minute, Olly found himself running into the Newtown penalty box with the ball and a tackle from behind from a Newtown player meant he was awarded a penalty kick. Olly stepped up to take the spot kick, however his shot was just slightly off target and skimmed the Newtown crossbar and then went out of play.

Well played Newtown Sports and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a great game of football. After his great performance during the match, Max was awarded the Captains armband for next week’s match. Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
