Another great team performance away from home

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s had another great team performance away from home when they visited the Lower Teme & Martley Jets U9s team at Martley Memorial Hall, Martley on Saturday 11th January 2020.

As a special treat for the team and after their great efforts so far in the season, Manager Steve Maitland arranged for the City boys to arrive in style to the match on a team coach. The boy’s rendition of ‘Three Lions (footballs coming home)’ was the highlight of the trip from Worcester to Martley!

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Max gave a positive speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Ewan
Defenders - Theo, Max, Tom & Joel
Midfielders - Hayden, Olly, Thomas, Toby & Ethan
Forwards - Nathan & Ethan

First Half
City started the game on the front foot and in the 3rd minute had opened the scoring through a long range strike from Ethan. His shot was taken from just outside the penalty box and was hit with enough force that meant, even though the Jets keeper got his hands to the ball, he was unable to keep it from going into the net (that was Ethan’s eighth goal of the season).

The match was being played on a sloping pitch and City were going down the slope in the first half, combined with a healthy wind also blowing at their backs, the City boys continued to have a number of long range shots against a Jets team who were struggling to keep pace. The shot closest to increasing the lead came from Ethan who was bossing the centre of the midfield area.

Despite this the Jets defence and goal keeper managed to prevent any further goals going in before the change of ends.

Second Half
In an almost identical start to the first half, City increased their lead in only the 27th minute of the second half. City had won a corner and after his initial cross had been blocked by a Jets defender, Thomas found the rebound falling to his feet again by the goal line. He immediately put in another cross which whipped into the danger area a couple of metres in front of goal and stretching to reach the ball at waist height with his boot was Ethan who superbly netted the ball (that was Ethan’s ninth goal of the season).

With the slope and wind lending a hand to the Jets performance, they were troubling the City defence more often in this half. However the City defenders Theo, Max, Tom & Joel and goal keeper Ewan were keeping them at bay and restricted them to only a few chances on target.

With the wind in their faces, the City boys were using the ball to good effect and playing the ball out on the ground through defence to the midfielders Olly, Hayden, Toby, Thomas and Ethan. The midfielders would then make some great link up play between them and the forwards.

City increased their lead further in the 48th minute when Nathan picked up the ball in the centre circle and ran at a number of Jets defenders, he evaded a couple of midfielders himself before a quick one-two with Toby to evade another and then ran into the penalty area and dispatched the ball into the back of the net (that was Nathen’s ninth goal of the season).

Well played Jets and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed an exciting game of football. After his great performance during the match, Olly was awarded the Captains armband for next week’s match. Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
