Honours even in a game of two contrasting halves

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s had a positive team performance away from home when they visited the Kempsey Colts U9s team at Plovers Rise, Kempsey on Saturday 18th January 2020.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Olly gave an encouraging speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Ewan
Defenders - Theo, Tom & Joel
Midfielders - Max, Olly, Thomas & Ethan B
Forwards - Ethan R & Nathan

First Half
The first half started with both teams seeing plenty of the ball but it was City who made the biggest impact when in the 6th minute, Max opened the scoring for City through a long range strike from outside the box. The Kempsey keeper managed to get a hand to the ball but a low lying sun facing him meant that he was unable to track it fully and the ball crept over the line (that was Max’s first goal of the season).

In the 10th minute, a few Kempsey players found themselves with the ball in the City penalty box against the City defenders Tom, Theo and goal keeper Ewan. A goal mouth scramble ensued with the ball ricocheting from player to player before City rallied and managed to get the ball away to safety.

Around the 15 minute mark, City won a succession of corners and it was on the third one that City further increased their lead through the boot of Joel. The cross from the corner landed in the box and bounced around a couple of players before falling to Joel a couple of yards from the Kempsey goal, his initial shot was blocked by the Kempsey goalie but the rebound was knocked in at close range (that was Joel’s second goal of the season).

City went into the break in control of the match through some good passing and movement from the whole team.

Second Half
City started the second half on the front foot again and in the 32nd minute Nathan managed to get himself clear in the Kempsey box with only the keeper to beat, but his shot went just over the cross bar.

This was closely followed, only a minute later with Nathan providing a lovely pass to Thomas in the Kempsey box, but this time Thomas’s shot hit the goal post and then out of play.

In the 39th minute, Kempsey strung together a number of great passes which dissected the City midfield and defence and with the same low lying sun in the City keeper’s eyes this time, the shot from Kempsey found the back of the City net despite a valiant effort from Ewan to save it.

In the 44th minute, Kempsey managed to level the score through a great run by one of their players who tucked the ball away in the City net.

Over the remaining minutes of the match, City tried their hardest to regain the lead and shots were bombarding down on the Kempsey goal through the boots of Ethan R, Olly, Ethan B & Thomas but unfortunately their shots were either going over the bar, wide or seemed to be straight at the Kempsey keeper who was doing a great job at keeping them out.

City felt disappointed at the end of the game for all the missed chances that they just didn’t manage to put away, but never the less it was a great comeback from the Kempsey team to finish the game level pegging.

Well played Kempsey and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a great game of football. After his great performance during the match, Ewan was awarded the Captains armband for next week’s match. Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
