Late victory for City in a closely fought match

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s battled to the end in a close match at home when they hosted the Nunnery Wood Colts Thunder U9s team at Perdiswell Leisure Centre on Saturday 25th January 2020.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Ewan gave an encouraging speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Ewan
Defenders - Tom, Theo & Joel
Midfielders - Thomas, Max, Hayden, Ethan B & Olly
Forwards - Nathan & Ethan R

First Half
The first half started well for City and in only the 2nd minute they nearly opened the scoring through a shot from the right edge of the Nunnery Wood penalty box by Olly, unfortunately for City his shot went just wide and into the side netting.

The rest of the first half saw few goal scoring chances for either side as both teams battled for supremacy mainly between the midfielders and defenders. Never the less, there were some epic performances on display from the City players in those areas.

Tom was commanding in defence in a deep lying role and was ably supported by Theo & Joel, who took opportunities to run forward from defence whenever the pitch opened up to them.

Max, Olly & Ethan B started the game in midfield and were battling hard against the Nunnery Wood midfield and defence but it was proving to be a stalemate situation between them. Thomas and Hayden joined the midfield at the midpoint of the half and kept the momentum going forward.

Ethan R started the match upfront and swapped position with Nathan at the midpoint, but neither player was able to open up any clear cut chances in this half.

Second Half
The second half started on a par with the first, however City’s constant pressure was beginning to open up the Nunnery Wood defence and in the 28th minute Ethan B had the ball near the goal line to the left of the Nunnery Wood goal. He played a great ball across the goal which dissected a couple of defenders and the goalie and fell to the feet of Ethan R, a couple of yards in front of the goal. However, not expecting the ball to make it through all those players, Ethan R struggled to keep the ball under control and once he found his shot, the Nunnery Wood keeper had recovered to make a great blocking save.

The City goal keeper Ewan had little to trouble him throughout the match but on the few occasions when called upon, he was more than up to the task of keeping a clean sheet for City for only the second time this season.

In the 45th minute, City produced a great passage of play as Theo picked the ball up in defence, he looked up and saw Thomas making one of his bombing runs down the left wing, Thomas picked up the great pass from Theo and made another short one-two pass with Nathan just outside the box. The pass back to him from Nathan left him in the left side of Nunnery Wood box with only the keeper to beat, but his shot went just wide and into the side netting.

The match appeared destined for a no-score draw, however in the 46th minute Nathan chased a loose ball from half way and ran at the Nunnery Wood goal. His shot from just outside the penalty box was on target and destined for the bottom left corner, however the Nunnery Wood keeper pulled off a great save and parried the ball to his right. Fortunately for City, Thomas was following up on the run from Nathan and was the quickest to the ball and was able to slot the ball into an empty net (that was Thomas’s sixth goal of the season).

Well played Nunnery Wood and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a close and exciting game of football. After his great performance during the match, Theo was awarded the Captains armband for the team’s next match. Thanks to all the City parents for their help and support on match day.
