Great team performance for City that wasn’t reflected in the score line

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s put in a great team performance away from home when they visited the Nunnery Wood Colts Tigers U9s team at the University of Worcester, St Johns Campus on Saturday 14th March 2020.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland gave a positive speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Theo (captain), Ewan, Max & Joel
Midfielders - Ethan R, Thomas, Toby, Hayden & Ethan B
Forwards - Nathan

First Half
The first half started well for City and in the 3rd minute they opened the scoring through a fantastic shot from distance by Toby, the ball was struck from outside the penalty area and nestled into the bottom right corner of the Tigers goal (that was Toby’s third goal of the season).

Not having it all their own way, the Tigers team were also playing well and putting City under pressure and in the 10th minute they had a shot at goal from just outside the City penalty box. Tom playing in the City goal was able to stretch a hand to the shot and push it onto the post before gathering it up.

In the 14th minute, Nathan had a chance to increase the City lead when he had another long range effort from outside the penalty box, unfortunately this time the strike hit the Tigers post.

It was Tigers who netted next in the 18th minute; they had won a corner and from the resultant cross, managed to hit home a close range shot into the roof of the City net.

In the 22nd minute, Max had a chance to break the deadlock when he attempted a long range looping shot towards the Tigers goal. However, his shot went over the cross bar.

A minute later and Tigers increased their lead when they scored from an almost identical corner, cross and close range shot into the roof of the net.

In the 24th minute, Hayden played a one-two pass with Nathan just outside the Tigers penalty box and on getting the ball back, Hayden struck a shot goal wards only to find it blocked by a Tigers defender.

Overall in the first half, the City boys were enjoying the space available to them on this large pitch and were managing to look up, find team mates with their passes and getting themselves into good positions.

Second Half
The second half began with both teams playing some lovely football again and it was City who came closest to scoring in the 27th minute, from a throw in on the left hand side of the pitch. Thomas threw the ball to Joel who struck another long range shot which went over the Tigers cross bar.

A minute later and it was Thomas who was warming the hands of the Tigers goal keeper after he had a shot which was destined for the back of the net but was saved with both hands by the shot stopper.

In the 30th minute it was Thomas again trying to level up the scores, when he picked up the ball on the half way line and ran towards goal. His run lasted to just outside the Tigers penalty box before he unleashed a shot which was destined for the bottom right corner of the goal, however the Tigers keeper got both hands down to the ball and managed to push it onto the post before gathering it up.

In the 35th minute, City won a corner and from Thomas’s cross, the ball fell to Joel who had a close range shot at goal. Unfortunately for City, the shot was blocked by a Tigers defender before it could go in.

In the last minute of the half, one of the Tigers players picked up the ball around half way and ran towards the City penalty box before slotting home a goal into the bottom right corner.

For the second week in a row the City boys were unlucky to have lost a game by two goals, when on another day could have come out winners, if only they had managed to put away all the chances they had created.

Well played Tigers and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed an exciting game of football. After his great performance during the match, TBC was awarded the Captains armband for the team’s next match. Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
