An exciting game of football for Worcester City FC U10s

Worcester City FC U10s had a great team performance when they hosted the Kidderminster Athletic Eagles U10s team at Perdiswell Leisure Centre on Saturday 3rd October 2020.

Manager Laurence Helme presided over the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Theo (captain) & Joel
Midfielders - Hayden, Ethan, Olly, Max & Ewan
Forwards - Nathan & Luke

First Half
City made a great start to the first half and dominated the early exchanges.

In the 2nd minute, City converted that domination into the first goal of the match. Olly found himself with the ball on the left corner of the Eagles penalty box, he struck a long range shot goal wards and despite the Eagles goal keepers best attempt to keep it out, the ball went through his hands and into the back of the net (that was Olly’s third goal of the season).

In the 13th minute, City managed to convert the pressure into another goal. With the confidence from the first goal, Olly once again found himself with the ball on the edge of the Eagles penalty box and he unleashed another long range shot. However, this time the Eagles goal keeper managed to pull off a brilliant save by blocking the shot with his hands. Unfortunately the keeper couldn’t hold onto the ball and his parried save rebounded to Nathan in the box and he blasted the ball into the net from close range (that was Nathan’s first goal of the season).

In the 21st minute, City came close to securing another goal. City had won a corner and the ball was crossed into the penalty box by Joel, the ball fell to the feet of Nathan who took a quick shot but this time the ball went just wide.

Second Half
The second half started well for City again, with few chances falling to the Eagles team, largely thanks to a great performance in defence by the Captain for the day; Theo.

In the 30th minute, City produced the move of the match to score a great team goal. Ewan ran with the ball into the Eagles half and looked up to see Nathan on his left in space, Ewan passed the ball and Nathan took two touches on the ball; one to control it and looking up he could see Ethan running into the box and with his second touch passed the ball into Ethan’s path. Ethan picked up the ball just inside the Eagles box and controlled the ball on the run before poking the ball past the approaching goal keeper, who managed to get a touch on the ball with his legs but not enough to keep it out and it rolled into the bottom right corner of the net (that was Ethan’s first goal of the season).

In the 38th minute, the Eagles pulled a goal back against the run of play by slotting home a shot from just inside the City penalty box.

In the 41st minute, the Eagles team, being buoyed on from their first goal of the match managed to pull another one back. And for the remainder of the match they remained in the ascendancy, partly due to boisterous support coming from the away team’s fans on the side lines.

In the 49th minute, City won a free kick and almost put the game to bed. The free kick was won half way into the Eagles half and Joel stepped up to take the set piece. His shot was blocked by an Eagles defender and the ball fell to Ewan in the penalty box, Ewan took a shot and managed to steer the ball around the approaching Eagles goalie. However, unfortunately for City the ball struck the post and was tidied up by a defender.

Well played Eagles and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a couple of dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed an exciting game of football. All the City players put in great performances in the game but it was Ewan who was awarded man-of-the-match.

Thanks to all the City parents for their help and support on match day.
