A friendly match on Remembrance Sunday weekend

Worcester City FC U11s visited the Droitwich Spa Crusaders U11s team at St Peters Field, Droitwich on Saturday 13th November 2021 for a friendly match.

Managers Laurence Helme and Luke Morris presided over the team.

Before kick-off, both teams impeccably observed a minutes silence to mark the anniversary of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, which commemorates the end of World War One and provides an opportunity to remember those who have died during conflicts for their country. Lest we forget.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper – Ewan
Defenders - Theo (co-captain), Joel & Tom
Midfielders - Olly, Arlo, Ethan and Toby
Forwards - Fraser (co-captain) & Max

First Half
In the 8th minute, City created a goal scoring chance. Following a Crusaders attack, Joel cleared the ball up field from a defensive position. Ethan got to the ball first in midfield and once under control, he played a pass forward for Max to run onto. Max ran through the Crusaders defence and onto the ball and immediately took a shot at goal from the edge of the Crusaders penalty area, unfortunately the ball went just wide right of the Crusaders goal post.

In the 9th minute, City opened their scoring account in the match. City were on the attack and Ethan had the ball approaching the Crusaders penalty area, as he reached the area he shot at goal but the attempt was blocked by a defender. The blocked ball fell to Fraser on the other side of the area and he shot low right into the back of the net (that was Fraser’s second goal of the season).

In the 21st minute, City created a goal scoring chance. Max won the ball from a Crusaders defender in their penalty area and immediately took a shot at goal going for the bottom right corner. However the Crusaders goal keeper made a great diving save and pushed the ball wide of the post and out for a corner.

Second Half
In the 32nd minute, City scored another goal in the match. City had won a corner and Toby stepped up to take the kick. His cross went across the front of the goal and a couple of metres out, the first player to the ball was a Crusaders defender and they attempted to clear the ball, but only got it as far as the left edge of penalty area where Fraser was waiting to pick it up. Fraser’s route to goal was blocked by a number of Crusaders defenders, so he ran with the ball across the front edge of the area and then passed the ball to Olly on the other side of the area. Olly controlled the ball and stepped into the area before playing the ball forward to Max who was mid-way into the area on the right hand side. Max ran onto the ball and with a few steps went deep into the area before firing a shot, from a tight angle, into the bottom left of the Crusaders goal (that was Max’s fourth goal of the season and Olly’s first assist).

In the 46th minute, Crusaders opened their scoring account in the match.

On the whole, this was a great team performance from City against a team that they’ve struggled to get results against in the past.

Well played Crusaders and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a couple of dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a great game of football. All the City players put in great performances in the game but it was Ewan who was awarded man-of-the-match.

Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
