A great match that looked destined to be a stalemate but ended in favour of the home team

Worcester City FC U11s visited the Perdiswell Colts Ospreys team at Bilford Playing Field, Worcester on Saturday 25th September 2021 for a league match.

Managers Laurence Helme and Luke Morris presided over the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Joel & Theo
Midfielders - Will, Olly, Ethan, Toby (captain), Luke, Ewan & Hayden
Forwards - Fraser & Max

First Half
Both teams started the match well and there were some great displays of passing and defending on show.

In the 11th minute, City created a goal scoring chance. Max had the ball and was on the right wing, mid-way into the Ospreys half. He cut in from this position and headed to the top of the Ospreys penalty area but before he got there, he spotted Fraser on the far corner of the penalty area and passed the ball for him to run onto. Fraser picked up the ball and was heading goal ward, however the Ospreys keeper had anticipated the pass and was already coming out to close the angles for the shot. As Fraser pulled the trigger and shot, the Ospreys keeper was almost upon him and managed to block the shot and the ball ricocheted out of play for a corner.

In the 25th minute, City created a goal scoring chance. From a defensive position in the City half, Joel launched a long ball into the Ospreys half. Fraser was the quickest attacker to respond and began chasing the bouncing ball as it approached the Ospreys penalty area. The Ospreys keeper also began to rush out, but it was Fraser who reached the ball just before the keeper and he chipped the ball over the keeper, unfortunately for City the ball went inches wide of the left post.

Second Half
Although the first half ended goalless, both teams were making progress into the opposition penalty box and there were a number of chances to score but the great defences and goal keeping for both teams was keeping it level.

In the 36th minute, City created a goal scoring chance. From a midfield position, Max and Will completed some one touch passing to take the ball around a couple of Ospreys defenders. Fraser joined in this great passage of play with a touch back to Max before turning his defender and Max then played a through ball for Fraser to run onto leaving him one on one with the Ospreys keeper. Fraser was just inside the left hand side of Ospreys penalty area and struck his shot goal ward as the Ospreys keeper came out to close down the angles, the keeper dove to his left but couldn’t quite get his gloves to the ball and it looked destined to go into the bottom right of the net. Unfortunately for City, the ball struck the right post and rebounded back into play for the keeper to collect.

In the 40th minute, Ospreys opened their scoring account in the match following a long ball pass which an Ospreys attacker ran onto and scored past the City keeper Tom, who had attempted to rush out of his area and intercept the ball.

In the 43rd minute, City created a goal scoring chance. The ball fell to Luke mid-way into the Ospreys half following an attempted clearance of the ball from an Ospreys defender. Luke took a once touch shot which looped over a number of players from both teams and was heading for the top left corner of the Ospreys goal. The Ospreys keeper reacted quickly and shuffled across the goal and got both hands to the ball but was unable to keep hold of it and ended up pushing it onto the cross bar before collecting the ricochet.

In the 48th minute, the City defence denied Crusaders a goal scoring chance. An Ospreys attacker took a shot from just inside the City penalty area and the ball was on target to go into the bottom right of the net. That was until the City goal keeper Tom, dove to his left and at full stretch got both hands to the ball. Tom wasn’t able to hold onto the ball, but pushed it far enough wide for Theo in the City defence to mop up the ball and play it forward.

Well played Ospreys and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a great game of football. All the City players put in great performances in the game but it was Tom who was awarded man-of-the-match.

Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
