A great performance from the City U11’s team but their luck had just deserted them on the day

Worcester City FC U11s visited the Welland Juniors Lions U11s team at Dyson Perrins School, Malvern on Saturday 9th October 2021 for a league match.

Managers Laurence Helme and Luke Morris presided over the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper – Tom
Defenders - Joel & Ethan
Midfielders - Hayden, Arlo (co-captain), Luke, Olly, Ewan & Toby
Forwards - Fraser (co-captain) & Max

First Half
In the 1st minute, City created a goal scoring chance. City won a throw-in midway into the Lions half; Olly stepped up to take the throw and passed it to Max. Max did a quick one-two with Olly to beat his defender and then turned to target the Lions goal, as he ran Max spotted Fraser breaking into the penalty area and played a through ball for Fraser to run onto. Fraser picked up the ball in the area a swung a shot goal ward which beat the Lions goal keeper but went just wide of the Lions right goal post.

After the great start by City, the match settled into an even contest between the two teams. There were some great displays of passing and defending on show throughout most of this half.

In the 24th minute, Lions opened their scoring account in the match from a corner kick which was knocked in from an attempted clearance.

In the 26th minute, Lions scored another goal in the match. The City team appeared visibly shaken from losing the first goal in an unfortunate manner and their concentration levels had dropped leading to this second goal.

Second Half
City were disappointed to go into the half time break trailing after the great performance they had made until those last 5 mins when lady luck deserted the team. Despite this they had believe that they could go out in this half and take the game to the Lions team.

In the 35th minute, Lions scored another goal in the match from a shot inside the City penalty area which Tom the City goal keeper managed to block with a diving save to his left, but a Lions defender was quickest to the rebound and put the ball away into the bottom left of the City goal.

In the 38th minute, Lions scored another goal in the match from a shot from outside the City penalty area which Tom the City goal keeper managed to block with a diving save to his left, but a Lions defender was quickest to the rebound and dinked the ball into the net over the keeper as he attempted to reach up and stop it.

In the 39th minute, City created a goal scoring chance. Arlo had the ball mid-way into the Lions half of the pitch and surrounded by a few Lions defenders, he had no other option than to take on the defenders by himself. With superb close ball control, Arlo dribbled and shimmied his way past one, two then three defenders to leave himself on the edge of the Lions penalty area with a clear route to goal. Arlo pulled the trigger and the ball looked destined to find the back of the Lions net but the goal keeper made a great blocking save.

In the 46th minute, City created a goal scoring chance. Fraser had the ball around the top of the D of the Lions area with only a Lions defender to beat; he dropped his shoulder and sent the defender the wrong way to create himself the space to move on goal. Fraser was now just inside the Lions penalty area and he took his shot, the ball looked destined to nestle in the bottom left of the Lions net but the goal keeper pulled off a great diving save to deny Fraser the goal.

Despite the Lions goals that were scored in those 15 minutes around the middle of the game, the City performance didn’t reflect the final score line and for long periods in the match the City team were on top. On another day, with a bit of City luck, the match would have been a lot closer.

Well played Lions and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a great game of football. All the City players put in great performances in the game but it was Ethan who was awarded man-of-the-match.

Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
