Colts progress in first cup outing of the season

On Saturday 7th December, Colts got their cup campaign underway against an Oldbury Park team that had narrowly beaten them in a pre-season friendly back in sunnier and warmer times several months previously. The fixture, originally due to be played at Bromwich Road and then Neele Park was finally switched to Perdiswell at the 11th hour for an 11am kick-off. The switch seemed to suit Colts, who boasted a full compliment of players for the very first time this season. Cam started in goal with Ollie, Dyl and Ewan forming a now-familiar and settled back 3, Nathan and Reggie starting as wide men and Caleb and Connor (making his first start) in the middle of midfield; Harry started up front allowing manager Stephen Coopey to name a robust bench in the form of Zac, Tom, George, Louis and Josh.
After a scrappy start in which neither team could wrestle an early initiative, Colts settled and started to boss the midfield. Connor looked particularly assured and linked up well with Reggie and Harry; Caleb and Nathan also got good early touches. Colts started to make their superiority count with wave after wave of attacks that were repelled by the 'mobile' Siberians 'keeper, who was always keen to leave his 6-yard box in a bid to cut-out any Colts attack.
It was to prove his undoing, however when a well placed free-kick from Reggie was hacked clear only as far as Harry, who looked up and curled a lovely shot over the advancing keeper onto the far top corner.
Shortly after, a ball over the top of the midfield dropped enticingly into no-mans land between Harry and the onrushing 'keeper. As the Colts striker chased down the loose ball, the goalie sliced the ball back into the fray, much to the delight of Connor, who with a first touch drilled the ball past the hapless No 1 into the net from near the halfway line. Josh replaced the hard-working Nathan late on in the half and immediately looked to be having an impact, both going forward and in covering when required.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, Coopey having made wholesale changes as expected to give all involved fair game time. With Zac in for Cam (who had an assured if quiet first half), Louis on for Harry, Tom replacing Ollie (who again worked really hard when required), and George replacing the industrious Connor.
Colts continued with their dominance, restricting Oldbury to a few speculative half-chances. A moment of brilliance from the quick-thinking Josh saw him beat the 'keeper at his near post after going past the full-back (despite calls from Steve along the lines of 'oh no, he's had a shot.........!').
Zac kept a cool head on the few occasions he was called into action and Tom continued his excellent recent form with a typical combative and determined display. Louis always looked a threat against a tiring Oldbury defensive line, and once he managed to beat the offside trap he showed good composure running from within his own half to slot home.
Harry replaced the tireless Caleb late on, after the midfielder had run himself into the ground, giving his all to control the midfield and finding himself somewhat unlucky not to have got on the scoresheet himself.
Some marvellous (if slightly nerve jangling) defensive work from the increasingly impressive Ewan and Dylan blunted most Siberians attacks; even when the long ball appeared to have exposed Zac to a direct threat, one of the defensive pairing always managed to recover their ground and snuff out any danger. The result was a second clean sheet in 2 games, which will be most pleasing for the management team.
In all this was a assured performance from a team that seems to grow in confidence and stature week by week. With one fixture left the before the Christmas break, both the team and coaches will be looking to end the year on a high.
