Colts slide to defeat against resurgent Bullets

A bright but Chilly Sunday afternoon at Chawson Valley saw Colts look to build on the previous weeks’ positive result against Perdiswell Bobcats as they took on Droitwich Spa Bullets U12. Colts went into the game in a positive frame of mind, having brushed aside their opponents earlier in the season. Starting with their now-familiar 3-4-1 formation with Elton in Goal, Fisher, Sivaharan and Beale making up the defensive trio, with Coopey Jr, Conner James, Nathan Box and Reg Perks occupying the midfield positions. Zac Johnson made a debut start up front after impressing in recent matches, and Glazzard, Bousfield, Heywood, Davies and Clarke formed the bench.
The initial exchanges were fairly evenly contested, however it immediately became evident that the home team were much changed and greatly improved from the team that Colts had beaten 4-0 back in September. The deadlock was broken after a mere 5 minutes when Droitwich forced their way through the City defence and their striker slotted home past an onrushing Cameron Elton, who picked up a knock in the process. Two minutes later and the lead was doubled – Elton clearly having trouble with his mobility and unable to stop the ball from nestling in Colts net for the second time in as many minutes. Colts were forced into replacing Elton – Caleb Clarke gallantly (if a little reluctantly) donning the ‘keepers gloves as Elton hobbled off.
Colts steadied themselves and started to get a foothold in the match with Conner James and Nathan Box in particular providing some steely resolve in the face of their determined opponents. Fisher continued his impressive form and the back three seemed temporarily more settled. 15 minutes in, and a seemingly cut-and-dried handball in the Droitwich area was waved away by the referee – a potentially pivotal moment as the boys strived to restore some parity before half-time. Manager Coopey rung the changes in advance of half-time, bringing on Glazzard and Heywood in place of Perks and Beale. Colts decent spell of play continued without much to show for it, Heywood linking up well with Box, providing a couple of clever through balls. However the home defence had just too much and repelled anything the lads could muster. Half time came with Colts 2-0 adrift, and Bousfield and Davies entered the fray in place of the industrious Johnson and Coopey.
The second half saw Colts concede goals on a regular basis despite some sporadic forays into the opposition half, with Clarke unable to do much with the hand he was dealt as a stand-in stopper. Colts seemed to be out-of-sorts as goals 3,4,5 and 6 whistled their way into the Worcester net without reply; however positive notes could be drawn from the last 10 minutes when the boys enjoyed their best spell of the game, with both Davies and Heywood drilling shots goal-bound, before Conner produced Colts best moment of the match with almost the last kick. Picking up the ball in the centre of the park, in a typically combative manner he picked his way through both midfielders and defenders alike before drilling a shot into the net for a magnificent solo goal – a bright moment in an otherwise chastening game.
Colts now have a weekend off to regroup, followed by a couple of friendlies to rebuild confidence before the league campaign re-starts in May.
