Match report by Dave Francis

What a difference a week makes! Right from the off we could tell the boys were determined to put right some of the wrongs from the previous week. The work we have been doing on the training ground appeared to have struck a chord (well done @⁨Ian Jennings⁩ ) and suddenly we looked threatening from throw ins, from set pieces and our movement on corners was outstanding!

Having started brightly we settled into our rhythm and passing game. The particular highlight was a four pass move started from Evan M, into Dylan, Dyl found Ben who played a ball in behind the defenders for Evan K to sprint onto, Ev K produced a Kevin De Bruyne’esque pinpoint cross for Tom to leap like a salmon. The ball looked in all the way apart from (one of several) world class saves from their keeper. If anything could sum up the philosophy we are trying to instil in the boys it was that free flowing move. From front to back in four passes and almost the goal of the season!

We deservedly took the lead from another excellent corner and Liam finished well. We continued to keep the tempo and were playing with the skill we know the boys have. We were unlucky to go into the break all square following a speculative shot from outside of the box squeezed in.

The second third continued to see some excellent hold up okay from the clear man of the match, Tom. He linked up the thirds excellently all game and with the powerful throws from Austin and Ryan we were a threat at all of the set pieces. Eventually our pressure told and following yet another great save from their keeper, Austin was on hand to put us back in front. The goal seemed to spur Kiddie on and some determined defending from Jack and Ben prevented them getting back into the game.

The game was effectively settled when the man of the match, Tom deservedly got in the scoresheet.

The final third saw us dominate throughout with Ryan peppering the goal with some wonder strikes, but once again their keeper prevented us from running riot.

In addition to the good play, the pleasing aspect for us coaches was the togetherness of the squad. On so many different occasions we could hear them supporting each other and talking about their respective positional play!

However we know there is still more to come from this team and there are still some areas we need to get better at. But all in all we were very pleased with the boys today. If we could have given gold to the team we would have! That said there were some standout performances today and rightly they should be recognised.

GOLD

The complete centre forward performance today. Awareness, link up play, hold up play, deft passes, movement, battling, body shape, speed, agility and finishing! Tom had it all in abundance today and deserved the Gold award.

SILVER

A calming influence that set the tone about building from the back. Strong in the tackle and confident on the ball. He looked natural at the back and a deserved silver for Dylan.

BRONZE

A tough one this week with some excellent performances from Ben and Ryan (who in particular came very close), but a deserved award from Evan K for his wing play during the game. In the first third he was caught the wrong side of the ball which let in their attack, but he learnt from it and was as deadly going forward as he was strong countering back in defence.

A good day all round. Our challenge now is to bring some consistency to our performances.
