Match report by Dave Francis

*The whole 51 minutes*

This effective knock out game was eagerly anticipated, with a victory all but securing passage through in our first ever JPL Cup tournament.

We were immediately under pressure from the start against a good passing side in Sporting Khalsa. Having weathered that initial burst of pressure we settled in and began to move the ball around nicely. One such move looked like we had taken the lead, but was rightly ruled out for a handball leading up to the goal (VAR would have got this one right). However it wasn’t long before we deservedly took the lead with Ben being in the right place at the right time to sweep home. Sporting Khalsa equalised shorty before the break and it was all square at the interval.

Into the second third and the pattern largely followed the first, with nothing between two sides keen on playing football the right way. We retook the lead with a great header from a corner scored by Austin only for us to allow Sporting back in and we were once again level pegging going in to the last third.

The team talk was to focus on the inputs (ie to continue to work hard and play football) and let the outputs take care of themselves. Unfortunately for the second week running we simply didn’t turn up. We were overrun across the pitch, made lots of unforced errors and were a shadow of our former selves. It was almost as soon as we conceded the third then there was a collective dropping of heads and lack of belief that we could get back in it. We looked beaten and, frustratingly, looked really unfit and all of the hard work in the first two thirds of the game was undone.

At 4-2 down we had a chance to get back in it but a smart save/the bar (not sure which) snuffed any glimmer of hope and two further goals put the game beyond any doubt. An unfair scorline but once again reemphasising the need for our boys to play for the whole 51 minutes, and not just for 34!

A sad end to what was a really good campaign. We showed in large parts how good we can be, and there’s so much to be positive about.

GOLD
Evan K has really blossomed in recent weeks and once again was at the heart of everything that was good about our performance. A constant menace going forward.

SILVER
Ben won his personal battles, played the simple pass, instigated attacks and did the hard work that could go unnoticed.

BRONZE
Another who has blossomed in the cup competition. He started well, defended on the front foot and started a lot of attacks through nice triangles. Well done Will!
