Match report by Dave Francis

WCFC U11s went in to the game against Coventry Sky Blues suffering the effects of a packed preseason, increase in both pitch size and time of game on the back of the global pandemic! This culminated in a number of injuries leaving a bare bones squad stretched.

That said the boys responded brilliantly with their fantastic warmup attitude translating to a very fast and impressive start to the game.

WCFC scored the first following a corner with Tom lashing home from close range as he was the quickest to react to a bouncing ball. The lead doubled as Austin was strongest to the ball and drilled one from the edge of the box, the keeper making a great save only for Evan K to be in the right place at the right time to finish from a cute angle. The perfect start was further evidenced from another Evan K corner and Tom producing a fantastic header which left the keeper no chance.

WCFC looked dangerous going forward but couldn’t add to the lead and Coventry were given a lifeline from a spilled cross which ended up ricocheting against our own player to reduce the deficit.

The second quarter was initially evenly contested first. Coventry pulled another one back following the midfield pushing too high, allowing them space to attack down our left flank and despite chances to clear the cross it was stabbed home from close range. The boys responded and Liam extended the lead with a well taken goal, securing the two goal advantage. A pulsating game continued with chances at both ends, Ev M making a great save when the opposition looked certain to score.

Then on to the learning lesson of this week. WCFC switched off for a throw, missed challenges culminating in a great strike. The boys had switched off and the game was level on the stroke of half time as WCFC failed to clear their lines following a corner and another great finish saw it even.

WCFC started brightly in the third quarter spurning a few chances, playing some nice football. However a counter attack down our left carved WCFC open and a cool finish put Coventry ahead for the first time. WCFC fought back and hit the post and had another glorious chance to equalise, but Coventry, and their excellent striker Andrew in particular, were stronger to the ball and scored another on the counter attack.

Into the final quarter and Worcester needed to start fast. Unfortunately they soon lost two goals in quick succession. Chances for WCFC came and went and a late consolation penalty from Ryan wasn’t enough on the day.

Another learning experience for which the boys will be better for it.

GOLD
After a difficult week last week, and an early setback, Evan M really grew in to the game and made some excellent saves and really patrolled the space between the defence and the goal.

SILVER
Evan K linked up attack and defence well and took his goal with ease. His corners creating two further goals.

BRONZE
Tom took his chances well and put in a typical battling display whilst linking up with Austin.
