City are out of the FAVASE after losing 4-5 on penalties in this Fifth Round replay.
With nothing between the sides after two games of 120 minutes, it went to sudden death before Atherstone scored to take them into the Quarter Finals.
The visitors took the lead after 25 minutes when a long range effort from outside the box from Sam Belcher went in off the post. City had a chance to draw level on 40 minutes but Sean Brains effort went high over the bar. On the stroke of half time City got the equaliser. A deep cross from Jamie Smith was met on the right by Luke English who volleyed home.
The visitors nearly took the lead on 62 minutes but Dan Jezpeh made a great save from Belcher, tipping the ball round the post when he looked certain to score. A minute later City broke out from a free kick on the right edge of their own box to leave Sean Brain and Liam Lockett two on one with a defender, Brain carried the ball through from the half way line into the Atherstone box but opted for the shot which hit the inside of the post and rebounded out.
In extra time there were few chances for either side. The visitors had an appeal for handball turned down whilst City had a glorious chance from sub Marco Adaggio. His chip from 10 yards out hit the inside of the post before rolling along the line and clear.
The game ended 1-1 after extra time.
In the penalty shoot out, Lockett, Brain and English scored City's opening three spot kicks which were cancelled out by Belcher, Quinn and Ruff. Then Sam Hall missed for City, Obi made it 3-4 to the Adders, City keeper Dan Jezeph drew it level at 4-4 then Haines missed his kick to take it into sudden death. Luke Rowe missed for City before Goodby added the fifth to make it 4-5.
A cruel way to go out for City but a great run which saw us go through from the preliminary rounds, winning through six rounds and in the draw for the Quarter Finals.
