City paid dearly for poor defending & finishing and were knocked out of the FA Cup at the first attempt.
City fans were still entering the ground 6 minutes into the game after being delayed on the motorway only to find the hosts with a 2-0 lead. The opener came after just 90 seconds when a Tyler Haddow shot rebounded off the post into the path of Louis Ezewele who bundled the ball into his own-goal. Minutes later Coventry added a second when Haddow tapped in from close range after being picked out by Riley O'Sullivan.
Archie Muirhead had a golden opportunity to pull one back for City after being put clean through on goal but Coventry Keeper Reece Francis saved well with his legs, the rebound fell to Chris Sterling but his header was cleared off the line and the ball was finally cleared.
O'Sullivan added a third on the half-hour mark for the hosts after the roles were reversed as he was picked out by Haddow to again finish from close range & at this point it looked liked Coventry might score at every move into the City box.
City had another glorious opportunity to pull one back on the stroke of half time when Aaron Roberts' header from a James Douglas free kick crashed off the bar from close range.
City made changes at half time as Luke English & Aaron Birch replaced James Douglas & Callum Debar but the second half started the same as the first as Coventry aded a fourth through a Billy Shaw own goal.
For the final 35 minutes it was mainly one way traffic for City as Coventry sat back & made substitutions. Francis made several fine saves in the Coventry goal until finally City managed to pull one back on 63 minutes when Archie Muirhead was put clean though into the box and slammed home into the bottom corner.
City had further golden chances but a series of poor decisions and finishing meant any chance of a come back was off the cards. The final nail in the coffin came with minutes to go as man of the match Reece Francis saved an Aaron Roberts penalty after Chris Sterling had been brought down in the box.
Not the start wanted for City but with the League season about to start on Saturday 14th August there is plenty of time to make amends.
