City booked a place in the 2nd Round of the WFA Senior Cup with a 3-1 win at Ribbesford Meadow but paid a heavy price with three injuries which left the team with 10 on the pitch for the final few minutes.
With a much changed team it was a night of robust challenges and it looked like City could be in for another high scoring game after taking the lead after just three minutes. Chris Sterling was sent clear down the left and he finished with a trade mark left footed shot across the goalkeeper Joe Stockton into the bottom right hand corner.
Bewdley responded with chances of their own with two falling to striker Luke Morris, his first a long range effort from the edge of the box which City keeper Jake Daniels parried away, then minutes later had a glorious opportunity after being put clear into the box by Josh Carpenter but his shot across goal went wide of the post.
Archie Muirhead added City's second 10 minutes before the break. He was sent clear into the box by Dan Westwood and slid the ball past the advancing keeper Stockton. Westwood looked as though he was about to withdrawn before grabbing a goal of his own just four minutes later. Cameron Monteith combined well with Chris Sterling who laid the ball back from the edge of the Bewdley box to Jamie Smith wide on the left. His cross was punched away by Stockton but straight into the path of Westwood who was stood on the penalty spot, he then let the ball drop before side footing it on the half volley over the helpless defenders.
Just before the break City lost Jake Whitehouse who went in for a ball just outside the City box but his late challenge on Olly Mulders saw him come off worse and saw the end of his game.
The second half saw Bewdley much brighter and they pulled one back on 65 minutes when Luke Morris went clear on the right into the box, with his shot beating Daniels at his near post. Within two minutes it should have been 3-2 after City failed to clear their lines. Josh Carpenter went for a one two with Adam Beardsmore on the edge of the City box but with Sam Hall first to the ball he slipped setting up Carpenter with a clear shot on goal, his shot was well saved by Daniels but straight into the path of the incoming Morris who somehow managed to completely miss the empty goal and shot well wide.
Bewdley forced Daniels into a double save, when first a Carpenter effort was parried away before Morris followed up on the rebound after that the game became scrappy with chances few and far between. The game however ended on a sour note as Bewdley defender Rio Bakala slammed into City sub Will Gibbons on the half way line with such force that the sound of Gibbons colliding with the away dugout and perimeter fencing could be heard across the ground. He was bizarrely only shown a yellow card, but combined with an earlier challenge was sent off. There were no further chances and the game ended 3-1.
