City are back in Hellenic League action on Wednesday evening as Chris Cornes' men head to Hereford Lads Club for a 7.45pm kick-off.
Lads Club are currently sat in 17th place in the league table, with 3 wins, 5 draws and 6 defeats from their opening 14 matches. On Saturday they were beaten 2-1 by Royal Wootton Bassett, and are on a run of just one win from their last thirteen matches in all competitions. Goals have been seemingly hard to come by so far this campaign, with just 15 goals scored in the league. Their top goalscorer so far this campaign is Brandon Jennings with 3 in 16 appearances.
City, meanwhile, have enjoyed their trips to Hereford so far this season, having faced Westfields in both the FA Cup and Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup at the nearby Allpay Park, coming away on both occasions with the win. City are on a fantastic run of eight straight wins in all competitions. The last time that City won eight games in a row was back in January-February 2000, and Cornes' side will be looking to increase that winning run on Wednesday.
Haydn Whitcombe is a man in seriously good form, and a big reason that the winning run continued on Saturday. His penalty save within the first five minutes of the match, mirroring his heroics from the previous round's shootout victory, saw City head in level at half time and pull away with the victory in the second half. Manager Cornes was full of praise for Haydn calling it a fantastic save in his post-match interview, and that his number one's confidence is sky-high at the moment.
Despite not being the greatest performance, Chris also spoke to WCFCTV about feeling his side were in full control of Saturday's match and also gave credit to his back four of Stoddart, Layton, Keightley and Mace, for their drive and determination to keep the clean sheet.
With City in recent cup action, our closest rivals Corsham Town have drawn level on 34 points, with City now having three games in hand on the Wiltshire outfit. Those games in hand begin on Wednesday, with Corsham not in action until Saturday when they visit Pershore Town.
Connor Gater got his first goal of the season with the opener on Saturday, a fantastic reward for him after his recent return from injury. Liam Lockett also grabbed the second to increase his impressive tally so far for the season, now on 14 goals in all competitions.
Last midweek's fixture against Calne Town saw Chris rotate his starting line-up, more out of necessity than choice with a number of first team players missing through suspension and availability. It will be interesting to see what changes, if any, may be made on Wednesday from Saturday's win.
