City go top with inspired second half performance

City go top with inspired second half performance

Ryan Molloy4 Jan 2024 - 09:32

Cornes' side came from 2-1 down at half time to win 4-2 in a huge Hellenic League encounter in Bristol

Three second half goals turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 win ensured that City moved back to the top of the Hellenic Premier Division table on Wednesday evening, overcoming a tough Roman Glass St George side with aspirations of promotion of their own.

The away trip to Bristol being City's third match in five days in this manic Christmas and New Year schedule, Manager Cornes refreshed his starting line-up with a couple of changes. The goalkeeper and back four remained the same, but Liam Lockett returned to the starting eleven after being rested for the Highworth win, and youth graduate James Batchelor also came in to the side to play on the opposite flank. Connor Gater was absent from the squad entirely, with Jamie Insall starting the match from the bench after an excellent shift on New Year's Day.

City started the game brightly and could have gone ahead early on when on the counter attack, Liam Lockett breaking free and finding Belmonte in the middle of the pitch, who turned and shot just wide of the right hand post. Belmonte also found James Batchelor unmarked in the box inside the first ten minutes, but his shot was saved well by Roman Glass keeper Dempsey.

Both sides continued to have chances in the opening exchanges, but the breakthrough would come on the half hour mark from an unlikely source. City skipper Adam Mace found himself in space and drilled a shot low into the bottom corner of the Roman Glass goal, past Dempsey, a striker's finish from the left back. In this massive encounter, City had their captain to thank for a first half lead.

Despite another good chance for Hart created by Jordan Lymn, it would be Roman Glass biting back who got the next goal. After good work down the right hand flank, the ball was played into Junathain Walker, Glass' returning signing. Even with the ball seemingly played slightly behind him, he managed to get an effort on goal which flew into the top corner, a fantastic strike.

City looked to hit back immediately and Batchelor had the ball in the back of the Glass net, however the referee blew for a seemingly soft foul in the build up. With wind in their sails following the equaliser, Roman Glass continued to press and went ahead for the first time in the match just before half time, Rhys Sarson with their second of the evening.

As City have shown multiple times this season, this team doesn't know when it is down and out though, and came out rejuvenated in the second half, courtesy of some advice and guidance from the gaffer at half time. Within the first few minutes of the half, Logan Stoddart created a chance for Belmonte who couldn't direct his effort on target, and an effort from distance by Lockett was just too high.

City got their own equaliser shortly before the hour, again through another unlikely scorer, Calvin Dinsley with his first goal for the club in his 30th appearance of the season. A good delivery by Mace from a corner was met by the head of Dinsley and into the back of the net. City deservedly level.

Despite having a second goal chalked off by the referee, this time for Belmonte following good work by Dylan Hart, again for a seemingly cheap foul in the build-up, Belmo made no mistake on 67 minutes, slotting the ball into an empty net to give his team the lead.

The points were secured with fifteen minutes remaining. Layton, battling hard to win back possession, found Belmonte in space, who was able to drive a low cross to Dylan Hart, making no mistake and smashing the ball home for his fifth goal in the last five games, City's number 9 in exceptional form.

Liam Lockett almost made it five late on, only denied by a brilliant save from Glass keeper Dempsey, but the two goal cushion was enough and City returned to Worcester with the three points.

The win takes City back to the top of the Hellenic Premier Division table, courtesy of being one of their games in hand on Corsham Town. Cornes' side are now one point clear of their title rivals, still with three games in hand. Next up for The Faithful is another trip down the M5 to Bristol, this time to Mangotsfield United on Saturday for a 3pm kick off.
