Match report by Lewis Howarth
A rainy Tuesday night at Claines Lane saw Worcester City look to get back to winning ways as they hosted a Sutton Coldfield side in front of 278 supporters.
City started the better of the two sides and five minutes into the match City managed to forge out their first chance of the game. On the counter attack, Kyle Belmonte slipped through Elliott Hartley, who’s effort was saved and parried out for a corner. Four minutes later, City came close to an opener with Adam Mace’s free kick curling just wide of the post.
Continuing on from their strong start to the match City thought they had their opener when Hartley once again linked up with Belmonte, who’s effort on the edge of the box flew just wide of the far post.
Despite City’s dominance, on 32 minutes Sutton managed to snatch the lead. A deep cross from the right-hand side manged to get the better of the city defence and pick out Beresford at the back post to poke it past Whitcombe.
However, City persevered and on the stroke of half-time Dylan Hart managed to put the blues level. Hart's effort was headed towards goal before cannoning off a defender and rolled over the line to put City all square heading into the second half.
Four minutes into the second half City came agonisingly close to taking the lead. A cross from Townsend down the left-hand side picked out Belmonte who’s header was cleared off the line with the resulting loose ball falling to Dylan Hart who fired over the bar.
Once again, City were punished for not taking their chances. This came in the 57th minute when a long throw into the penalty area reached Kory Burke whose volley was tapped past Whitcombe to regain Sutton’s lead.
The second half that followed became very scruffy with both sides struggling to create chances. The closest attempt at a goal came in the 82nd minute when Kory Burke slipped passed Charlie Wise, he sprinted into the penalty area with his effort curling inches wide of the post.
City’s final chance at gaining an equaliser came at the hands of Liam Lockett in the 96th minute when his free kick on the edge of the box lifted over the wall but flew over the crossbar.
The referee blew full time and City continue their poor form in the league and will be looking to get back to winning ways as soon as possible with their focus turning to an away day at Long Eaton on Saturday the 12th of October.
