City played the full second half with 10 men for the third time this season with Lee Hughes being sent off just before the break.
After an even first quarter of the game, City took the lead in tremendous fashion. Daniel Nti found Lee Hughes on the far left of the United Box and Hughes beat his defender before unleashing a drive which bounced just in front of the keeper into the bottom corner.
City pressed on with optimism, with Danny Jackman shooting from range and Daniel Nti heading over.
On 41 minutes City should have gone further ahead. Great work from Daniel Nti down the right saw Shaun Harrad given a glorious chance but he was unable to force the ball over the line from close range and United cleared.
Just before the break City were looking ahead to another half with 10 men as Lee Hughes was given a straight red card for retaliating after being fouled on the half way line.
United started the second half brightly with Jerome Wright taking on the City defence with a great run only for his shot to be headed clear by Alex Gudger, then five minutes later Sean Cooke shot over the bar after another good run.
United continued to press making the most of the extra man. A free kick from Sam Madely for United on 65 minutes was saved by Nathan Vaughan.
In the 80th minute Vaughan tipped a long-range dipping effort from Matthew Wolfenden over the bar then with minutes remaining Sam Madely had a glorious opportunity to level the scores from close range, but he blazed high over the bar from inside the six yards box.
With just a minute of normal time remaining the game was effectively over. City won possession mid way in their own half and Deon Burton threaded a terrific ball through the United defence for Tristian Dunkley to show a blistering burst of pace to out run his marker and beat the United keeper Lewis King to the ball before finishing from 12 yards out, sending the City faithful, who had made a trip of up to six hours, absolutely delirious!
United were unable to create any chances in the added time and the score ended 0-2 on a wonderful night in Manchester
