City came from behind to earn a well-fought point against the Glassboys at the War Memorial Athletic Ground on Wednesday evening.
In a soaking wet floodlit fixture, City started the better of the two sides as Teddy Rowe’s cross from the right-hand side was firmly caught by the Stourbridge keeper, Charlie Price.
The hosts started to hold their own against a City side, who came into the game on the back of a frustrating draw versus Kettering Town on Saturday.
City’s first proper shot came from left back Jordan Lymn, who ran through the middle of the park, firing his effort over the bar.
A trip in the penalty area by Spencer Hamilton saw Stourbridge awarded a penalty. Forward, Jez Abbey slotted it away to put the hosts 1-0 up.
Moments later, loose defending around the Stourbridge back line was pounced on by Liam Lockett, who played a ball into Felix Miles, only for the hosts to scramble it clear.
City continued to pry, as Jordan Lymn played a curved cross into the Stourbridge penalty area. It was slightly too long and could not be converted at the back post by Felix Miles.
Stourbridge came close to adding a second just past the half-hour mark. Fin Holmes delivered dangerously into the Worcester area with veteran forward Ty Barnett heading his effort wide of the post.
The momentum continued for the hosts as Jai Verma’s strike was deflected behind for a corner kick, as the hosts continued to also dominate possession.
The hosts then doubled their lead 40 minutes in. Ty Barnett’s threaded pass beat the City high line, and Fin Holmes was there to chip his effort over Worcester keeper Harley Price.
City started to grow as the second half matured, moving the ball nicely around the Stourbridge half. Midfielder, Kyle Belmonte with the first chance of the half, but his effort flew over.
Midway through the half, City’s pressure paid, as Kyle Belmonte’s ball into the area was fumbled by Stourbridge keeper Charlie Price, and Nathan Hayward was there to tap the ball home into an empty net.
A controversial piece of refereeing saw a premature whistle blow, with City through on goal in a 2 v 1 position. City felt aggrieved.
City almost had the game back on level terms when Kyle Belmonte won the ball just outside the area, firing a low, driven shot inches wide of the post.
Debutant Kobe Chong, who was signed earlier in the day, played a ball into goal scorer Nathan Hayward, who had his powerful shot saved by Charlie Price.
As the game ticked towards the dying moments, defender Paul Downing was quickest to react to a bobbling ball from a City corner. He swung his left peg, driving the ball low past the Stourbridge defences, giving City a well-deserved last-minute leveller, rescuing a point.
Next up, City will face Real Bedford at Sixways Stadium on Saturday, 20th September in the Southern League Premier Central. The Blue And Whites will look to continue their positive run of 4-unbeaten in Step 3 of the non-league pyramid.
