Worcester City fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Stratford Town under the lights at the Arden Garages Stadium in the Southern League Premier Central.
The hosts started brightly, forcing several early openings in the first five minutes. Forward Owen James lifted an effort over Harley Price, only for City to scramble clear for a throw-in.
Stratford continued to enjoy the better of the early play, with captain Lewis Ison’s low strike comfortably gathered by Price.
As the half wore on, City grew into the contest, with the midfield beginning to find space and link play in attack. The hosts almost caught City out on the counter from a corner, but James’ strike was well off target.
Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, with the game goalless at the break after a half of few clear chances.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Stratford starting on the front foot once again. The hosts went close to opening the scoring on the hour mark, but a key defensive block from City denied them.
That pressure finally told fifteen minutes from time, when substitute Cyrus Bruce headed home unmarked from a Henry Landers cross, just moments after coming on.
City pushed hard for an equaliser late on, creating some promising moments in added time, but were unable to find a way through as Stratford held on for all three points.
Worcester will now turn their attention to Saturday 18th October, when they welcome Bishop’s Stortford to Sixways.
