Worcester City cruised to a maiden home win of the Southern League Premier Central campaign after a comfortable 2-0 win over Bishop Stortford at Sixways.
City got off to a quick start when a ball into the area was received by Jordan Lymn, whose shot ricocheted off the back of Zac Guinan. A couple of minutes later, Liam Lockett was unmarked in the area, but his shot was caught comfortably by Stortford keeper Adam Hayton.
Thirteen minutes in, and the deadlock was broken when a perfect pass into Sweeney allowed the striker to break away and put Worcester 1-0 up with ease.
As the first half progressed, City continued to dominate most of the chances as they looked to double their advantage midway through the first half.
Worcester soon doubled their advantage when one of Bishop Stortford’s debutants, Charlie Johnston, launched a back pass towards his own keeper but managed to pull off a magnificent finish into his own goal and stunned Sixways in the process as City went 2-0 up.
As the crowd began to recover from the moment of madness, City still carried on pressing the Stortford backline as Worcester looked to kill off any sort of a comeback.
Dan Sweeney almost bagged his second of the afternoon when he was again unleashed after a great pass into the forward, yet again, but his effort was blocked by the visitors’ defence as the half ended with Worcester 2-0 up.
As the second half commenced, City looked strong going forward as the midfield linked up the play in the final third brilliantly. Evidence of this was when Dan Sweeney again came agonisingly close to his second of the afternoon after a great save by Adam Hayton in net.
After a great double save by Stortford keeper Adam Hayton, Bishop Stortford had their closest chance of the match. A pass in to the box by Jack Smith was subsequently cleared by the City defence.
A long-range effort from City midfielder Kyle Belmonte in the 80th minute was fired just inches over the bar as Worcester remained in the hunt for a third goal of the afternoon.
Kyle Belmonte was in amongst the action yet again as a close-range pass from debutant Harry Burns reached Belmonte six yards out, but was hit straight over the crossbar with just over five minutes of normal time left.
Despite some late half-chances from the visitors, it was not enough to trouble the defence as Worcester eased to a first home league win of the season.
City will be back in action at home on Tuesday 21st November when fellow Worcestershire side Bromsgrove Sporting head to Sixways in the Southern League Premier Central.
