Worcester City fell to a deserved 2-0 defeat away at local rivals Alvechurch under the lights at a Baltic Lye Meadow on Tuesday.
The opening ten minutes were evenly split between the two sides as both teams created attacking opportunities, all of which were dealt with by the opposing defences.
City had the first real chance of the evening when a curled effort from Liam Lockett dipped just inches over the crossbar as Worcester looked to pile on the pressure.
Worcester came close again when Zac Guinan’s driven ball across the face of goal was only inches away from being tapped home by the City frontline.
Thirty minutes in, neither side had managed to break the deadlock despite some promising attacking moments from both City and the hosts.
However, on the forty minute mark, the hosts opened the scoring. A close-range save from Harley Price fell kindly to Szhem Whyte-Hall, who fired in the rebound to put Alvechurch 1-0 up.
After the goal, Alvechurch kept City at arm’s length for the remainder of the half, with Worcester trailing at the break.
Five minutes after the interval, Alvechurch doubled their lead through a long-range strike from Callum Sullivan that found the bottom left corner.
City looked to mount pressure on the Alvechurch defence but were unable to break the hosts down on a difficult playing surface.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Worcester continued to push for a way back into the contest and forced several corner kicks in the hope of halving the deficit.
Despite several pinpoint deliveries, City were unable to break down the hosts, and the game ended in a 2-0 win for Alvechurch.
Worcester City will host Royston Town on Saturday 29 November in the Southern League Premier Central, with a 3pm kick off at Sixways.
