CITY START WITH A WIN

CITY START WITH A WIN

Jack Hundley6 Oct 2017 - 09:53

Convincing start to the campaign...

CITY got their season off to a winning start with a convincing victory over Heanor Town.

The game started off quickly, with Worcester looking to attack from the get go, and it certainly looked like City had the cutting edge up front as City had an effort hit the crossbar before striker Dave Reynolds managed to block a clearance by Heanor's keeper Joe McCormack, and slot the ball straight into the empty net on the 7th minute to give City the lead from early on.

With Heanor chasing the game, and City looking for a second, both teams adopted a free-flowing attacking style of football, earning a number of corners, most notably one to City which reached joint manager Lee Hughes, who had his effort end the wrong side of the post, before moments later being played in through on goal, only for his effort to go over the crossbar.

The second goal of the match was a good piece of counter play, as Dave Reynolds took a left footed shot at goal from 25 yards out which gave Heanor's keeper McCormack little chance to save. The 37th minute goal certainly helped spur on the team, earning another 2 corners before the break.

City went into the break 2-0 up, and it didn't take them long to get going again in the second half, Matt Birley having a shot from the edge of the box saved, before City gained another corner to be taken by Jamie Smith in the 54th minute. The ball was floated in deep and perfectly found Mark Smith in space near the unmanned back post for him to head the ball home.

With City now three goals to the good, John Snape made changes, giving James Baldwin, Tyreese Ruddock and Aaron Brett game time. City continued to show off their attacking capabilities during the second half, and arguably should have got another couple of goals through Lee Hughes and Aaron Brett, but it wasn't to be.
