CITY GO SECOND AFTER HITTING FIVE

CITY GO SECOND AFTER HITTING FIVE

WCFC ONLINE11 Dec 2021 - 23:02

City 5 Romulus 1

City moved in to second place in the table after a thoroughly entertaining game which saw a 5-1 win at Claines Lane.

With the game in doubt after the previous two matches had been called off, the match Referee deemed the pitch playable after a morning pitch inspection. The pitch and facilities later drew much criticism from a furious City manger Tim Harris after the game.

City brought a new signing to the squad as Reiss Taylor-Randle joined in the week.

City got off a perfect start and went ahead after just 22 seconds. Straight from the kick off James Douglas pumped a long ball deep into the Romulus half which was put out for a corner by Khail Harrison. From the resulting corner kick from Bailey Fuller, Will Gibbons was first to react prodding home from a yard out at the near post.

Romulus had keeper Josh Benton to thank for several excellent saves during the first half which kept them in the game although the visitors did have decent opportunities of their own. On 9 minutes Benton pulled off a tremendous save after a superb City move ended with Billy Shaw saw his shot tipped round the post. From the resulting corner Romulus cleared to the edge of the box and an incoming James Douglas smashed a shot goal bound but Benton again saved.

Two minutes later the visitors had their first chance after gaining a free kick ten yards in from the half way line. Sufyan Zia's inswinging cross was met by an unchallenged Cameron Lee whose looping goal bound header was tipped over by Adam Harrison. From the resulting corner City failed to clear and Rylan John had a golden opportunity to draw the sides level but hit his shot wide. A minute later Harrison was called on again after Dalintin Ticha's cross ended up heading goal bound but the City keeper did well to tip over.

On 28 minutes City doubled the lead. After forcing another corner on the Romulus left, Bailey Fuller played a short ball to George Baker who picked out Aaron Roberts deep on the back post, he then headed back across goal to Will Gibbons who headed home from a yard out. City nearly added a third after Billy Shaw and Sam Whitton worked a great move down the middle of the pitch which ended with Bailey Fuller pulling the ball back along the goal line but the chance went begging with no one on hand to finish the move.

Khail Harrison then cleared one off the line from a Sam Hall header after another City corner just before the break.

Billy Shaw had an opportunity to add a third straight after the break but Benton pulled off another fine save, this time using his legs after Shaw was played in on the left by James Douglas. City then lost George Baker after he was caught by the studs of Ricardo Reid which resulted in him needing hospital treatment. Within a minute Romulus pulled one back from the penalty spot after Sam Hall brought down Trea Bertie just inside the box and Ricardo Reid hit his kick straight down the middle to make it 2-1.

Any chance of a comeback was quickly snuffed out. With Romulus on the attack City won the ball back ten yards inside the home half and a quick break down the right wing saw George Baker thread a ball through to Billy Shaw who checked back and fired home from just inside the box.

On 70 minutes it was 4-1. Another good move down the right resulted in Bailey Fuller storming down the wing leaving his marker on the ground and then pulling back from the touchline to new signing Reiss Taylor-Randle who controlled well before finishing in the bottom corner

Then on 78 minutes the game was sealed after Romulus again lost the ball on the attack after Sam Hall read Ricardo Reid through pass. Hall found City skipper Aaron Roberts who went wide to Bailey Fuller on the touchline, he then quickly moved forward to Archie Muirhead who slipped in Billy Shaw. Shaw then flicked the ball on the inside off his right foot past the totally stranded Callum Rudd before dribbling into the box and unselfishly square to a completely unmarked Taylor-Randle who side footed home for his second and City's fifth.

There was a final chance for City seconds before the end when a Bailey Fuller corner found Sam Hall but his header was directed well wide.

The win moves City into second place ahead of the next game scheduled for the 18th December against Lichfield City at Claines Lane, a top end of the table clash which deserves a big crowd.
