Robins win competitive clash

City gave a good account of themselves in a competitive contest that deservedly went the way of the home side in the end.

Evesham's front two of Cardy and Gudger proved the difference - giving the visitors' backline a torrid morning with their pace, intelligent movement and clinical finishing.

However it was City who started the game the brighter and, after Archie Thurston had the first shot of the match, Jamie Neath looked certain to put his side into the lead after being set up delightfully by Guy Collett but his goalbound shot was kept out by an excellent last-ditch block.

After Evesham scuffed their first opening wide, City did go in front when Will Cottell latched onto a clearance by goalkeeper Josh Reed-Jones and coolly finished.

Unfortunately the advantage was only shortlived as within moments United capitalised on some hesitation in midfield. Although the resultant cross was cleared, the loose ball was drilled home from the edge of the box.

Reed-Jones then ensured the sides went into the first break level as he spectacularly tipped over.

Billy Owen had the first shot of Q2 before the hosts went in front when the ball dropped luckily off a City defender for Gudger to roll into the gaping net. City nearly equalised minutes later when Owen teed up the lively Cottell whose effort just went the wrong side of the post.

Cruelly for the visitors, Evesham extended their lead when they tucked away a rebound after another good Reed-Jones save.

As a fairly even quarter drew to a close, Thurston, who was having an excellent game on his return to his former side, hit a superb through ball to Owen but the midfielder sliced wide.

Reed-Jones prevented United extending their lead at the start of Q3 when he blocked with his feet, whilst at the other end, the home keeper kept out a Thurston header from a pinpoint Collett cross.

City were enjoying the greater possession and looked to be rewarded when Harry Rebbeck had the ball in the net after good build-up play from Collett and Neath but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Rebbeck eventually got his goal after being fed by a sumptuous Collett pass but it didn't arrive until the home side had added a fourth after City failed to deal with a long throw - not the only occasion that this Evesham weapon caused them a problem.

The visitors went into the final quarter with every confidence that they could get something from the game but, after Reed-Jones made another decent stop, Evesham capitalised fully on the opportunities that came their way.

A classy run and finish put them 5-2 up and this was followed by two own goals either side of the goal of the game as Cardy drilled a rocket into the top corner. Prior to their last two strikes, Thurston did manage to pull a consolation back when he prodded in from close quarters.

City can have no complaints about the final outcome of the game although the scoreline was possibly a little harsh on them and, whilst they are yet to defeat Evesham in their three JPL contests, they deserve much credit for a competitive performance in which they fought for everything from start to finish.
