Team finds form in friendly

City recorded an emphatic 5-0 friendly win over Cheltenham Town but more pleasing than the result was the manner of the performance.
Under the floodlights, the visitors lit up the evening with fluid, free-flowing football in which they were strong all over the pitch – the defence holding their own and restricting the hosts to few shots, the midfield dominating and creating numerous chances for the forwards.
City settled into the game quickly and took the lead when Oli Sheahan and skipper Cian Sheehan combined for the latter to feed Jesse Asomugha, who outsprinted the home defence and coolly slotted in.
One quickly became two when Will Cottell and David Ferreira linked up well on the right to set up Asomugha for an easy tap-in for his second.
Ferreira went close with a flick from a corner and Jack Pocknell and Guy Collett also fired shots from distance before City enjoyed further success down the right. Good interplay between Matt Athey and Archie Thurston resulted in a cross being turned into his own goal by a Cheltenham defender.
The visitors changed formation for the second-half and gained almost instant reward when a Cottell cross was retrieved at the back post by Charlie Grubb, who rolled the ball across for Ferreira to net his first goal in City colours.
Grubb was heavily involved in the next few plays as he firstly got on the end of a marauding Sam Cotton run down the left wing to set up Cottell, whose shot struck the base of the post.
After shooting just over himself following a neat tee-up by Jamie Hill, Grubb tried his luck from an almost identical place only for his effort to ping back off the bar and it was still rattling moments later when George Hymas struck it with another piledriver.
City finally grabbed a well-earned fifth when Asomugha scrambled in from a corner to complete his hat-trick.
With the match in its final throes and his team-mates continuing to press, Cottell hit the post again as City ended the game as they began it on the front foot - hopefully raising the standard for their upcoming fixtures and dispelling their deserved friendly defeat at TDMS a few days earlier as a bank holiday blip.
