Composed win after early wake-up call

City showed no ill effects from their second match in less than 48 hours as, despite an early scare, they produced a confident display to collect a composed and comfortable 4-2 win at Paget Rangers.

An early kick-off in North Birmingham for this JPL Shield tie saw the visitors woken into action as Paget - looking fired up to avoid a third defeat at the hands of City - pinged the ball around to break into the box and score unchallenged in the first minute.

City answered their wake-up call in the best way possible and were back on level terms within a matter of minutes as Jamie Hill split the home defence with the perfect through ball for Jesse Asomugha to collect in his stride and slot home.

For the rest of the half, City dominated as a good interplay between Jamie Neath and Asomugha set up Will Cottell for a shooting opportunity and Charlie Grubb was then denied by an offside flag after he appeared to run through for an onside position to score. However a second goal wasn't long coming as Grubb turned provider to square from the right for Jamie Neath to lash into the net.

Paget were struggling to deal with Hill's skilful play as the midfielder set up Cottell for a gilt-edged chance that was saved and they had another lucky escape when Asomugha nodded wide from Grubb's pinpoint corner delivery.

With City dominating, the inevitable third goal came as Josh Reed-Jones went route one - kicking out from his hands to Asomugha, who brought the ball down beautifully and shot across the keeper and in off the far post. The striker almost had his hat-trick before the interval after the busy Hill set him up with another chance.

City remained relatively comfortable after the break with Cottell nearly extending their lead on a couple of occasions.

They were hit by a sucker punch when Paget pulled a goal back from a counter attack midway through the half. The hosts' tails weren't up for long though as, within moments, Asomugha put the game to bed as his attempted shot across goal hit a defender and sneaked in at the near post to secure a second successive away win in the competition, progress into the next round and, to the credit of every member of the squad, stretch the team's unbeaten run to double figures.
