Despite another determined display from Rugby Town, an even more determined display from City was enough to set up a clash with Lincoln City at Aggborough in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.
Second-half goals from Danny Glover and a a penalty from Tom Thorley secured victory at Butlin Road giving City £7,500 in prize money.
As on Saturday Rugby made the brighter start and probed the City Box for the early part of the game. City came back with plenty of possession and ended the half on top but neither side troubled their opposing keeper.
City took the lead in the 56th minute. After a City attack, the Rugby Keeper, Niall Cooper threw the ball out to his right midfielder and just short of the half way line Danny Glover showed great determination to steal the ball. He then took a defender on before unleashing a shot from the edge of the box which was saved by Cooper, the ball rebounded back to Glover who fired home to make it 1-0.
Minutes later it was 2-0. Neat passing build up play deep on the left wing between Ellis Deeney, substitute Danel Nti and Danny Glover saw Glover take the ball just outside the box, he took the Rugby Skipper Alex Gudger on but was tripped and the Referee did not hesitate to point to the Penalty Spot. Tom Thorley stepped up to beat Cooper.
The game was effectively over and despite late pressure, the closest Rugby came to pulling a goal back was when Marsden curled a shot wide past Jose Veiga's post late on.
