City's fabulous Cup run which has done so much for the Club and the City as a whole is finally over, almost three months after it started back in September when the run started with a home win over Rugby Town.
It took 210 minutes of football and 32 penalties before Scunthorpe United finally went through 13-14 on penalties.
It was a nail biting but pulsating night of end to end drama witnessed by City's biggest & nosiest home crowd for 30 years
Once again City matched their League 1 opponents every step of the way in every department and the neutral would have found it very difficult to pick who were the part timers.
City dominated the first half, George Williams shot wide early on before Tristan Dunkley's penalty appeal was turned down by the referee
Tyler Weir headed off the line before The Irons early substitution Hakeeb Adelakun wasted a gilt edged opportunity, firing wide with an open goal beckoning and Nathan Vaughan made two saves from Lyle Taylor..
Daniel Nti had an opportunity minutes later after a trade mark George Williams run down the right wing ended in a cross into the area, but the striker's shot crashed into the side netting.
The 4th Official raised the board to show 1 minute extra time for the first half and two minutes later The Irons forced a corner. Gary McSheffrey took which Paddy Madden got his head to and the ball rebounded off Ellis Deeney in off the bar despite Nathan Vaughan making a desperate attempt to clear.
In the Second half it was much of the same with end to end football with Jordan Murphy causing headaches all night for the visitors. On 69 minutes Murphy and Daniel Nti combined well once again on the left hand side before Sean Geddes was freed to dribble into the box before firing home from close range to level the scores and send the Aggborough Crowd wild. It was a just reward for City.
If the noise wasn't intense enough already, it increased tenfold as City laid Siege to The Irons goal. Man of the Match Jordan Murphy unleashed a superb drive from 25 yards which forced a magnificent save from keeper Slocombe who tipped over the bar.
Daniel Nti then sent an overhead kick straight down the throat of Slocombe as City piled forward but they had to settle for extra time.
The extra period end in stalemate and then came the most intense 15 minutes in City's history.
Sean Geddes went first for City with Paddy Madden following up to draw level. City then missed and further successful attempts led to a 4-3 lead for The Irons and the pressure all on Wayne Thomas, who duly converted. Nathan Vaughan then saved to keep it 4-4. City then missed before The Irons had the chance to win it but another save from Nathan Vaughan forced it to sudden death. Both Goalkeepers converted meaning all players would have to line up once more to re take. City finally missed and with the score at 13-13 Liera stepped up to win the tie to send the Irons through to the Third Round.
It was a fabulous night of football watched by tens of millions of people around the World and for those inside the ground a night to remember.
