City's Cup exploits ended in an FA Trophy replay as Southport clinched a last minute winner in an eventful game at Aggborough.
In an end to end game City got off to a blistering start as Tristian Dunkley stormed down the left wing in the 3rd minute, crossing into the box to be forced over the line by Daniel Nti.
City swarmed forward at every opportunity early on with Dunkley, Nti and Ebby Nelson-Addy all trying to force a second.
But City's early good work was undone in the 24th minute. Southport forced a corner and in one of several well orchestrated set pieces saw several players quickly shifting position and in the melee Tristian Dunkley upended Almond who then stepped up to draw the scores level.
The game continued to go from end to end with Southport causing problems for the City defence with every set piece.
Five minutes before the break the Conference National side nearly went ahead when Wright beat Ethan Ross with a header but Lee Hughes was on the line to head clear.
The second half got off to go promising start for City as Daniel Nti nearly headed an equaliser only to be thwarted by Crowcombe.
On 65 minutes Southport broke out and took the lead as Wright swept home a cross to make it 1-2.
Tristian Dunkley nearly drew the scores level sending a blistering 20-yard effort inches wide then Mike Phenix forced a save from Ross after a mistake by Tom Sharpe at the other end.
With minutes remaining City finally drew level. A Lee Hughes cross in the box was handled by Paul Rutherford and referee David Rock gave a penalty which Hughes stepped up to smash home.
With extra time beckoning City's set piece frailties came to the front once again as Blakeman whipped in a free-kick from deep in side the City half which was headed in by Thompson.
City nearly responded straight from the kick off as six players swarmed forward but Kieran Morris' volley from outside the box swung away from the goal and the score ended 2-3.
