City ran out 8-1 winners over lower-league Bridgnorth

City returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 8-1 win over Midland League Division One outfit AFC Bridgnorth.

As has been common in the last few games, Manager Cornes again rotated his starting eleven and made us of his squad. Goalkeeper Haydn Whitcombe returned to the side after being unavailable for the last few weeks, and Logan Stoddart came in for Monteith at right back. Kirk Layton continued in the centre of defence after his goal midweek, and Dylan Hart returned to the starting side, with Jamie Insall leading the line through the middle.

Former City man Mark Danks captained the away side.

After some early City pressure it didn’t take long before the got the first goal of the afternoon, 11 minutes to be exact, a penalty dispatched coolly by Hart. Shortly after on 17 minutes Insall made it two for his first City goal, neat work by Gater to tee him up and a good finish.

Goalscorer Hart was replaced just before the half-hour mark, an injury worry for the man in form and Cornes ahead of a return to league action on Wednesday night. Kyonn Evans came on to replace Hart, himself returning from absence over the past couple of weeks, a show of squad strength ahead of busy upcoming fixtures. The enforced change didn’t affect the flow of the game though as Insall bagged his second of the game just before half-time, City heading in to the break with a big advantage.

In the second half City continued to assert their dominance and controlled the flow of the game, and increased their lead through Thompson Brown and a brilliant effort to make it 4-0 with just over an hour gone.

A slight blot in City’s ledger for the day was a Mark Danks goal, possibly the best finish of the day a few minutes later, to for a short time return the scoreline to City’s four goal advantage. It wasn’t long though until Lockett helped himself to a goal after good work in the box to make it 5-1.

Two City changes followed with Taylor Randle and Sheehan replacing Thompson Brown and Gater, and it was six goals shortly after with a brilliant drive into the bottom corner from Logan Stoddart inside the box for his first City goal.

The action wasn’t finished there after Bridgnorth’s Wood brought down Lockett in the box for City’s second penalty of the afternoon, and up stepped Insall to secure a hat-trick on his first City start.

There was still time for one final goal for the afternoon as Insall got his fourth and City’s eighth to send City roaring into the next round of the Vase.
