Kyonn Evans' strike after just two minutes against Westfields on Tuesday night was enough to secure City's place in the Marsh Challenge Cup Semi Finals, and also equal a 47-year club record in the process.
City have now won fourteen consecutive games in all competitions, equalling the record set between March and April 1977, and now with an opportunity to cement their own place in the club's history books. The current run started on New Year's Day with the 3-0 win over Highworth Town, and consists of seven Hellenic League games, two FA Vase ties, and five matches in the Wiseman Lighting and Marsh Challenge Cups. An incredible achievement for Chris Cornes and his side.
Cornes was able to make a number of changes to his side for Tuesday's cup encounter which included first starts since injury for Connor Gater and Calvin Dinsley. This allowed the City boss to experiment with Jordan Lymn in the number 10 role, also handing a rest to Kyle Belmonte, and Lorcan Sheehan continued in the centre of defence alongside Elliott Keightley, after his goal on Saturday. Joe Stockton also took his place between the sticks, whilst Kyonn Evans was handed a start up front.
And it didn't take long for Kyonn to make an instant impact, slotting home from a Logan Stoddart cross to give City the perfect start. Evans continued to be a nuisance for the Westfields defence, laying on a good chance for Lymn minutes later who wasn't able to direct his shot on target, and was himself inches away from an Izak Reid ball to the back post to get his second.
Reid himself was also close to doubling the lead and did in fact have the ball in the back of the net after 20 minutes, but the linesman's flag and offside ruled that out.
The blue-and-whites went in at half-time with the rain lashing down in Hereford 1-0 up, and had Joe Stockton to thank for a couple of smart saves throughout the second period for keeping them ahead, proving a worthy understudy for Haydn Whitcombe. Gater and Dinsley were both taken off on their return matches to protect with massive games coming up, and further chances fell to Lymn, Keightley and second half substitute Monteith, but the score remained 1-0.
The Quarter Final win sets up an away Semi Final with Hellenic Division Two Central side Letcombe on April 13th, who are currently top of their division, and overcame Fairford Town on penalties after a 3-3 draw in normal time last week.
City now have the chance to record a record-breaking fifteenth win in a row when they travel to Pershore Town on Friday night.
