Worcester City 2 North Ferriby United 1

Daniel Nti’s two penalty strikes earned City all 3 points against last season’s runners up & early table toppers North Ferriby United

On the day that Worcester saw one of their key men, Ebby Nelson-Addy head for Brackley Town, the blue and whites defended bravely to cancel out King’s early strike for United.

There was one forced change for City prior kick off as Connor Gater returned to starting 11 in replacement for the leaving Nelson-Addy and again fielded the same back four which is slowly becoming one of the most resolute defences in the Conference North.

Within minutes of the start it looked as though City would be in for a torrid afternoon as Liam King poked the ball home from close range to give the away side the lead after 4 minutes. A low cross wasn’t dealt with well by the back four and one of the top scoring sides of last year saw their opportunity to pounce.

Nathan Jarman nearly doubled the score for Ferriby a minute later when Nathan Vaughan passed the ball straight into the striker’s feet only for the post to deny his rebounded effort. A very fortunate moment for City, as Jarman isn’t a striker that needs too many chances to score, with 22 goals in the 2013/14 season.

The visitors were pressurising City into early mistakes and the blue and whites were looking very nervy in the opening stages. City's first chance came when Nick Wright appeared to be through on goal and strike home before a late linesman's flag cancelled out the goal for offside. On the half hour mark Connor Gater put Daniel Nti through on goal with a very accurate ball only for Nti’s powerful effort to be saved by the body of Nicklin.

Ellis Deeney and Gater both had half chances for Worcester as the side finally began to get a foot in the game. Gater headed over from a Jackman free kick, and Captain Deeney blazed the ball out the ground when he picked up a ball from outside the box.

Things started to heat up in Aggborough just before half time. City were temporarily knocked down to ten men when Wayne Thomas cut his right eye, leading him to wear a bandage for the remainder of the game. The towering striker Symons also got a card for dissent.

The half time whistle blew with Ferriby going in 1-0 up, with Jarman causing serious problems for Worcester City.

Graham Hutchinson headed over the back from a Jackman corner creating the first chance of the second half. Hutchinson is always a threat from set pieces but was unable to convert on this occasion.

The referee looked to have given Symons a final verbal warning after consecutive fouls. His physical presence proving to be too much for the opposition.

On the 63rd minute City made their first change introducing Tristan Dunkley with Nick Wright making way. Worcester were improving their game as the clock ticked on, Dunkley’s pace looked to give Worcester that cutting edge immediately causing problems for the Ferriby defence. As the crowd responded to the pace of Dunkley, creating a terrific atmosphere, it looked as though they would not have to wait long before something happened.

Dunkley’s introduction looked to be a masterstroke from Carl Heeley as he earned his side a penalty. His darting run into the box caused havoc as the experienced Nathan Peat brought the winger down with a clumsy challenge.

Nti converted his penalty on the 73rd minute mark to give City the equaliser. Nicklin got a hand to the ball but the power of the shot couldn’t keep it out of the net.

North Ferriby reacted from the equaliser immediately, as Nathan Jarman’s snap shot was well saved by the falling Vaughan. Nathan Vaughan equal to everything that Jarman offered, despite causing City problems all afternoon.

City were also desperately looking for the first win of the season, as Symons pulled back a ball across the six yard box only for Hutchinson to agonisingly miss the ball. The onslaught continued and in the 86th minute Mike Symons was put through into the box only to be hauled down by Matt Wilson to earn City a second penalty as the City faithful cheered in hope of a match winner.

Daniel Nti stepped up again confidently to convert his second penalty of the game. Again Nicklin got a hand to the ball but his palm just wasn’t strong enough much to the frustration of the Ferriby side.

City defended strongly in the 5 added extra minutes and Nti enjoyed a standing ovation from the fans when he was subbed late on for Jacob Rowe. but City held on for a much deserved three points.
