City got back to winning ways & the first of 2015 in this Vanarama Conference North League match.
Jose Viega was back in goal for Nathan Vaughan and Shabir Khan at left back in place of Danny Jackman.
The first half was uneventful with few chances for either side. Tom Winters came closest for Oxford with a free kick which was easily saved by Viega and it wasn't until the final ten minutes until City tested De La Cruz. Sean Geddes put Aaron Brown through on the left & with the keeper bearing down lifted the ball over him but the shot which was going wide of the post was cleared by Stonehouse.
Minutes later City had the best chance of the half. Aaron Brown was clattered over just inside the box from a Daniel Nti cross and as his penalty appeal was turned down the ball fell to Sean Geddes who was forced back to Ellis Deeney. His lofted pass into the box was headed down by Brown into the path of Mike Symons, who turned the defender well but agonisingly shot wide of the right hand upright.
The second half came to life after the 50th minute. Tristan Dunkley replaced Aaron Brown and immediately caused problems. His first contribution was to be fouled ten yards outside the box and with Sean Geddes stepping up, The City Faithful were hoping for more of the same from Saturday, but the shot went just wide of the left hand post.
The only goal of the game came on the hour. City forced a corner which Sean Geddes whipped into Daniel Nti whose flick went to the back post straight into the path of the unmarked Wayne Thomas whose side footed volley was too good for the Oxford defenders.
A minute later City had another chance when an Ellis Deeney throw in was cleared into the path of Connor Gater. His shot from the edge of the box went inches wide of the upright.
City were well on the front by now and just seconds later nearly went 2-0 up. Neat skill by Connor Gater saw him send Daniel Nti clear on the right wing. De La Cruz decided he wasn't going to make it and as he scrambled back to his goal Nti's lob sailed sailed over his head but onto the roof of the goal.
Oxford's best chance came from a free kick on the edge of the City box but the shot from Rodriguez went high and wide.
With the game drawing to a close Oxford threw players forward but it was City that looked more likely to score. Three corners were forced in quick succession with play halted after the third due to a clash of heads.
City defended well to bring the game to a close and the first three points of 2015
