Lee Hughes marked his home Worcester City debut with two goals and was unlucky not to have claimed a hat-trick in the first ever game v Curzon Ashton. A goal in each half for Hughes was cancelled out with almost the last kick of the game by Jordan Wright.
City were boosted with further signings Shaun Harrad and Deon Burton who both took places on the bench, but Tyler Weir was ruled out through injury picked up during last weekend's draw at Stockport County and was replaced by George Nash.
City got off to a great start with Lee Hughes latching onto a through ball from George Nash on 7 minutes, shaking off his defender to smash the ball past Hakan Burton.
Curzon came to Aggborough with a good style of play, keeping possession for long periods but the City defence stood strong until 29 minutes. The visitors forced a corner which Nathan Vaughan punched straight to the feet of Daniel Shaw who made no mistake on the half volley through a crowd of players.
Within minutes Curzon thought they had taken the lead. Matthew Warburton's cross was bundled in by Gary Burnett after a goal mouth scramble but referee Michael D'aguilar had already blown for a foul.
Literally on the stroke of half time the visitors thought they had won a penalty. Daniel Nti brought Warburton down, but just as he made a connection the referee blew for half time, giving City a let off.
City pushed forward in the second half with Lee Hughes involved in most of City moves, hitting a volley on 48 minutes which was saved by Burton. On 57 minutes City took the lead, Hughes again was involved forcing a clearance which gave City the ball & to Daniel Nti wide on the right, his cross finding Hughes in the six yard box & his header gave Burton no chance.
Within three minutes City nearly added a third. A long ball over the top by Danny Jackman saw Nti beat Burton to the ball on the edge of the box, his first touch taking the ball past the keeper, but with the goal at his mercy Defender Andrew Watson made an excellent block on the line.
Curzon throughout the match carried on with their possession game, passing at every opportunity and nearly scored an equaliser on 71 minutes. Another good build up saw Warburton shoot over from 10 yards out.
City made changes which saw Nti go off to rousing applause in the 89th minute as Connor Gater came on.
With the time running out, Curzon forced a corner which was played over the top of everyone but Gary Burnett showed more desire to win the ball to gain back possession, Alex Brown found the unmarked Jordan Wright in acres of space and his drive bounced in front of Nathan Vaughan to clinch a dramatic equaliser.
